Aren't the "usual targets" enough? I mean, think it through...

Christianity is based on a Bronze Age religion. Every "moral" belief that Christians hold dear, is based on this archaic understanding of the world. It has flavored virtually EVERY aspect of their faith since it's inception almost 2000 years ago. In all that time, the faith has not changed in sufficient measure to keep up with the changing moral and ethical needs of a modern society.

One can look at the Christian destruction of other faiths, the horrors of their wars in the Holy land, the attrocities of the Inquisition. Think about it.... a mere 200 years ago, these folks were burning people for being witches and werewolves because their faith demanded it. Now they want to call a "mulligan" and pass the same Bronze Age laws now that they've been trying to pass for the last 2000 years.

The laws they seek to pass simply do not promote economic, social, or scientific growth. Issues like stem cell research and gay marriage are nothing more than a symptom of the disease. That disease is called religion, and in America, Christianity is among the most prominent religions.

The issues they raise in the public conciousness and the morality they attempt to pass into law are simply extensions of their hate-mongering death cult. Watching Christianity in action is much like watching a magician at a childs birthday party. They talk a lot to distract you from the fact that their tricks are easily explained. They wow you with their charismatic charms while all of their talk is really nothing but smoke and mirrors. They effectively get you to watch one hand pull their rabbit out of a hat so you don't notice the pile of dead bunnies at the back of the stage.

But you wanted examples. Among other things, the Bible teaches the following values:

Hatred for women
Hatred for gays
Hatred for people of other religions
Wife beating
Child abuse
Murdering children
Murderering victims of rape
Ignorance as a virtue
Family abandonment
Excessive drinking
Incest
Animal abuse
Slavery

Among the least palatable fables in the Bible are 2 similar stories of "righteous men" who gave women to mobs of gang rapists. These stories are meant to convey the virtue of hospitality. Now think about that for a moment... If you're a good host, it's okay to give your virgin daughter or female slave to a group of gang rapists so they won't disturb your guests. It's okay to do that because God says it's alright!

These are the very things that Christians do not want people to know about their beliefs. These are the things they base their faith on, and most of them are too simple-minded to know it. The laws and morality they wish to force on modern society stems from these beliefs.

Well, i find that religion tends to hold back scientific progress. I'm not American, and have never been there, so i can't give anything overly specific about the effects in America, but i did hear once that the pope asked Stephan Hawking not to look into the first moments of the big bang. That would be a definite example of how religion holds back science.

...Okay...I'm a Christian and I'm not that opposed to stem-cell research. It's maybe just the using embryos that has gotten me a bit uncomfortable (but I think that they can find an alternative maybe with an animal or something).

If you consider progress "moral deterioration"...then we're not doing much at all, unfortunately. What you could consider progress could slowly be depreciating the value of humanity. So we're not doing much to hold back "progress" (some of the greatest people in history were Christians...and many Christians made pioneering discoveries in science.)...but we "try".

Seriously. Whatever happened to "respecting other's religions" and "religious freedom"?

Progress is relative. I will wager you are a utilitarian so christians hold back progress for you in regards to societies ability to administer health care costs. Christians believe every individual is of value but utilitarians believe you have balance the value some one brings into society with the cost they impose on society. So christian dogma has forced society to make infanticide illegal even of the children would never have really enjoyed life or been a burden on society like down syndrome or autistic babies. ONe could make the world so much more effeicent and benefit most people if those children did not exist but christian morals prevent implementing this kind of policy. In Europe they are making this kind of progress.

Christianity is the reason western civilization exists. It was the philosophy of rugged individualism that allowed free markets to develop. Personal moral enforcement reduces the burden on society of protecting itself. Without Christian morality society will collapse under the burden of enforcing its laws and only a dictatorship can survive so I hope we don't make any more of your progress.

If you mean progress toward our destruction as a society and a nation, you just mentioned two of them.

First of all I am not Christian but I find your question offensive to my Cristian brothers and sisters. If it would not have been for the Judeo Christian philosophy that founded USA we would have gone to the dogs immediately and been another Sodom or Gommara. I applaud people with high values and say to them God speed.
