Please note this is coming from an Agnostic, so don't take it to heart: I think you can only sin if there is hate in your heart. So, I think you'd have to know it was bad in order to sin.

Baha'u'llah says every soul has the capacity to recognize truth. I'm thinking that might mean that every soul has, also, the capacity to recognize error.
I think our consciences are not comfortable when we sin; but, we may not be sure, as yet, whether or not it is sin. But, once we KNOW it's sin; I believe, we are held responsible for that sin. I think the thing is--we sin away, and wonder why our life is so screwed. Then, at some point, if we're lucky, we become convinced of exactly what constitutes sin. From that point, we may make a conscious effort to avoid sinning, because we KNOW what we are bringing down on ourselves. So, maybe it's sin whether we know it or not--it's just that we can consciously avoid doing it, once we're sure of what it is.
Once we KNOW; we can begin the journey of outgrowing our sin: three steps forward, two steps back: pick youself up again, dust yourself off, get back on the path and go forward towards God.
All you, consciencious, believers of whatever religion--you know from whence I speak, right? Rome wasn't built in a day--and we don't change overnight. I believe what He's looking for is, conscientious, effort in the right direction.

Nope, a sin is a sin. It says in Romans that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"...which means we sinned even if we didn't know we were sinning. Like what we do when we're babies...the tantrums, the spoiled-ness, etc. etc. But the good thing is that there's another side to the sin equation...Redemption. God has the power to make you a new person, and all you have to do is accept the gift he has to give.

HA HA HA....good question.
To a little child, or someone who is mentally retarded or disabled, the answer is, yes...sin is only sin when he is able to realize he is sinning.
For the rest of us, sin is breaking God's laws.
Since God made sure we have His Word, which explains His laws, we have no excuse for our sins. Here in the US, Bibles are readily available everywhere. You can pick one up for a few dollars in any discount store. If you don't have a few dollars, most churches will give you one for free, if you ask. If you live in a place where God's Word is freely given, you have no excuse not to know God's laws.
We know what God's law is. We just don't always want to obey, so we try to figure out ways to justify having our own way.
And that is definitely sin.

The fact that it is a sin does not change but what happens if you commit it depends on your knowledge of it; you will not be considered a sinner if you did not know it was a sin or you were forced to do it while in heart you resent it.

The Hebrew Scriptures (OT) tell us that sin is a transgression of the law. So, strictly speaking sin is sin. Personal or moral accountability depends on the act being intrinsically wrong, the person knows it is wrong, and intentionally does it anyway. So, though something may be sinful, a person may not be sinning personally.

Different people have different views of what sin is. Most fundies think that homosexuals are sinners because they have sex with the same sex. But homosexuals do not see themselves as sinners although fundies told them so. So in the end, you don't really know if it is a sin. The meaning of sin has become too vague.

The sin is when one has created it with or without knowledge. The sin is within the soul of the one......
Now.. the moment he is become aware that he did something wrong..... The path he chooses to correct or disregard the ill of it, will be as a stain upon his soul....... (or be blotted out)

AH Yes, the arena of sin Sayer's. It is quite simple to figure out, if you do something and someone else dose not like it, then in their eyes it must be a sin.
Be careful you finger pointers because you always have 3 pointing toward yourselves.

yes but to be willfully ignorant of right and wrong is also a sin. I would say God expects you to find as much knowledge of right and wrong as you have access to. One can also gain knowledge directly through intuition so even if you haven't read a spiritual rule, if you feel it is wrong you are on notice. Conversly if you try to understand right and wrong by reading it and you remain confused you might not yet be accountable.
