It's the truth!

That's how it is in any true "armed conflict" or war. Feeling bad about it means you are human. It also means you recognise that the other being is human like ourself and that you value human life.

If it didn't make you "emotional" or if your derived some kind of pleasure from it, then you would have something to worry about.

Unfortunately it is something you have to live with for the rest of your life.

Look at it this way. You joined the military b/c deep down inside you wanted to serve your country. This is what your country has asked of you.. and you are doing it. Right or Wrong you didn't choose your mission only to serve.

I think that many people serving in the military have the same confusion about killing people. Morally it is wrong to kill another person, but because you are there in the defense of the country in war, you must kill to protect yourself physically and protect our country's integrity and freedom.
I suggest that you get counseling when it is provided through debriefing and also on your own once you return home. You may be dealing with a bout of depression, which is unhealthy, especially in your current conditions.

My prayers go out to you and I wish you the best.

No buddy. Navy here. This is one of the unfortunate aspects of our job. We never joined the service to "kill someone". We joined for the adventure and other opportunities. Lets face it, we do more traveling than most of our civilian counterparts.

In between all that duty calls and we are the nation's 911 so we have to respond.

Don't feel guilty. Concentrate on coming home and do whatever is possible to ensure that. They have the option to lay down their weapon, if they choose not to then cap them right between the eyes and come home safe.

Stay safe and lets drink a beer when you get back.

Btw, I'm currently in Kuwait.

I want to personally thank you for what you are doing to make our lives and the lives of our children safer, and my prayers are with you soldier. Good luck and stay safe!

im sorry that u have to go through this. i think no one in their right mind if they know 100% of whats going on and what will happen (to others who they deemed as the "enemy", and the effects to themselves and families of both sides), will voluntarily choose to go to war. but often than not, people who are drafted into the military life, do so for economic reasons, or perhaps some naive nationalistic determination. not necessarily a bad thing. but suffice to say, the rich policy makers are not sending their babies are they?

u are a man with conscience, and i hope u will remain that way. be safe, do what u need to do. but never forget tho that they are people too. most of them perhaps forget to see you as fellow human being, but as the representatives of those policy makers. war does that to people.

I'll pray for your safety, and so that when you go home you can teach and spread love and understanding. :)

it depends on who you ask. everyone's viewpoint is different. as long as you think it's right, keep doing what you believe is right. if it bothers you, quit doing it. ask to be re-assigned to a different field or area or whatever it's called. as for me, i stay neutral in all areas of war and politics. i don't believe in war, but i know that in this world, peace is just a dream because of all the terrorists and dictators that are about. so if you feel what you're doing is just, then continue with what you're doing, but this question is not a question with a black and white answer. it's an opinionated answer so it all lies within you and what you feel is right. best of luck.

listen, your just doing what you signed up for. when you sign up to defend your country...you have to be aware that you will have to do whatever it takes to protect your home. your doing it for a cause, whatever that cause is to you. i really hope that they have some type of help for you guys when you return home because those are feelings that will never go away, no matter how much time has passed.
most people will not understand it, but all that matters is if you know the purpose. hopefully you will soon come home....you will be in my prayers....
just make it your goal to come home safe...thats all we care about.

You're a soldier right? it's your job. It doesn't make it any better or worse. And you are right, it's either you or them going home. Guilt is fine. But if you really can't take it, get another job

I was a soldier too in the Israeli army.
as long as you do your best too keep humane and not act like a beast then you do your job and it is OK.
just make sure you don't do any thing you don't have to do and you know what i mean.
