A fatwa is a legal pronouncement in Islam made by a mufti, a scholar capable of issuing judgments on Sharia (Islamic law). Usually a fatwa is issued at the request of an individual or a judge to settle a question where "fiqh" (Islamic jurisprudence) is unclear.

Zifikos reply says it all. For example a fatwa regarding smoking that it is haram (forbidden) because it is a waste of money and health.

This is a fatwa issued by the Mofti in Egypt.

Peace

Previous answer is not a "fatwa" itself but it ressemble one to the degree that it too "tells it and calls it for what it is."
