I had two cocker spaniels and two part persian cats - they all grew up together and never fought except for when fighting over cauliflower - they all loved that (this is true - not joking)

It certainly isn't instinctive. I have a very large dog and two cats which get on really well together - even sleep together. Some dogs and cats have a natural aggressive tendency, which usually becomes apparent over territorial rights. Some dogs may fight with cats, but almost all dogs will chase after cars - it's a paradox.

the cat is intimidated by the bigger dog. it is not power or strength that leads to conflict but fear. often times cats attack dogs if they are cornered and have claws. dogs chase anything that runs, playfully, sometimes can seem scary when a big dog barks but he doesn't think he's scary. cats scared he runs, dog thinks 1. playtime (thousands of years of domestication) 2. food runs away, dog chases, grabing and shaking is play, corners the cat, cat strikes back.

if either is a baby when they meet the fear is lessened and they come to know eachother.

Because this old wives tail says they do. My cats and dogs have never fought and I won't even begin to try to quantify the numbers on this.

dogs "think" they're stronger and want to reveal their strength, cats know they're as strong but they want to hide the strength. No pets would concede ! Dogs- arrogant, cat-resilient !:D
