and when i replied to him saying, 'prove it'
he asked 'how'
and i mean,what is he trying to even say or mean?

Love is a feeling, he probably don't know how to show "it" to you. But for sure, he have no much experience in this.

Make a request of getting him to do something for you, like make him book for a candle light dinner for you and him, a X'mas gift, accompany you for a concert, movie; etc. See whether he can do this simple thing ? Then, is the first step of love to you.
