WATER! Drink lots of it. To start out, try drinking a large glass of water before EVERY meal. Drinking the "before" glass will help to fill you up and reduce the amount of food you eat. Then, drink another glass with your meal. Cut soda out of your diet. Get into the habit of ordering water instead of tea or soda when you go out to eat, especially at a fast food place. Even when your combo meal comes with a drink, resist and choose water.
FOOD! Try to cut back on your portions. If you go out to eat, ask for a to-go box right when you get your meal and put half of the food in the box and shut the lid. Try making the veggie portion of your plate take up more area than the meat. Try to reduce the amount greasy, fried foods. If you order a cheeseburger, cut it in half, stick half back in the bag or in a box and eat a salad with it. Give yourself choices. If you really want to eat dessert, then eat a large salad for your dinner. But, if you really want to eat that yummy pasta dish, then no dessert. Also, try to make your meals about more than just the food. Set the table, add flowers & candles, sit down with your fiancee or friends or family, have a conversation, pay more attention to your company and surroundings than to getting the food into your mouth. And, remember, you do not have to finish all the food on your plate! Slow down, and when you get full, put your fork down and remove the plate so you don't keep picking at it. Also, try eating your dinner earlier in the evening. I started eating at 5:30pm instead of 8 or 9pm and lost 5 lbs in 2 weeks.
EXCERCISE! Despite what people think, the real reason that none of the diets ever work is because you must have some sort of activity in your life. You don't have to join a gym. Take a walk after dinner. Put your dog on a leash and let him drag you around. Dance in your living room to the music you listened to 10 years ago. Limit yourself to 30 min on the computer and 30 min of TV. That will leave you a lot of time to do something besides sitting. Go swimming, biking, anything will help.
JUST REMEMBER....it takes at least 2 weeks of doing something to make it a habit. Don't freak out if you falter a little, just start over. Don't expect to lose weight immediately. What you can expect is to feel better and have more energy. And, remember, any diet that makes you lose weight fast will make you gain it all back just as fast if you don't keep up the pills, drink, or other miracle cure. You can't live the rest of your life taking diet remedies everyday, but you can live every day being healthy and feeling great. Having a buddy to HELP & ENCOURAGE in the beginning helps out too. It is going to take a while, but you have to start somewhere. If you drink soda, stop. If you can't go cold turkey, replace half of your sodas in a day with water, until you don't drink it at all.
Then focus on eating. Eat more meals per day, with smaller portion. Don't go crazy worrying about carbs, fat, or any other type of loony trick. Just eat smaller portions and work in healthy foods like fruits and veggies as much as possible.
Get at least 30 munites of exercise every day. Even if it is just walking around the block, that is fine. Health weight loss is 3-5 pounds per month. Take it slow and easy.
