So when did God invent hell, as far as I know,
the OT / orthodox Jewish faith does not have a hell so what made him change his mind and make a place to punish non-believers was it out of revenge or did the church invent it as a means of control.

It's based on the idea of the glory of God. The glory of God is torment to those who are out-of-sync with the natural progress of the universe. This view is still common in Greek Orthodox circles, but in Latin Christianity this idea was transformed into the idea of a literal place of torment. The final debate on the issue was in the 15th century at the council of Ferrara-Florence, where the Greeks defined the idea of hell as an unrepentant soul in the presence of God (the "uncreated fire"), and the Latins defined the idea of a literal place (the "created fire").

Hell isn't an invention, it was created as a place for people (first of all the fallen angel Satan, Lucifer, the Devil, Bad Boy, whatever you'd like to call him) to be away from God. Wikipedia tells me that "Hell, according to many religious beliefs, is a place or a state of pain and suffering." In Catholicism, there is another place called Purgatory. It's a place inbetween Heaven and Hell(and no Earth isn't between Heaven and Hell) Purgatory is where you have to work off your debts(evil doings) and then you can go to Heaven. Hell is eternal seperation from God.
There are rules though. You might ask yourself "if babies died a second after they were born, would they go to hell?" The answer is; no. There are things that talk about special deals like that, but i don't exactly know where and what they are.

I don't believe in hell. Just one reason that I don't believe in Hell can be found in Genesis 3:19. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return."

This was God talking to Adam as he was thrown out of the Garden of Eden for committing the sin of eating from the Tree of Knowledge. It said that he would return to dust. Now I don't know about you. But it seems to me that this would have been as good a time as any to mention him or his offspring being tortured and burning forever in Hell. Also look at this bible verse Acts 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

I don't believe that here they were talking about a fiery place of torment. I don't believe that a place like that exist. I could go on and on. Hell is like the first poster said the common grave of mankind. To people back then, the thought of not existing was the worse thing that could happen.

Do you know what hell is? Webster’s unabridged dictionary tells us that hell corresponds to the Hebrew Sheol and the Greek Hades. It also says that hell comes from the English word helan, meaning “to conceal.” So we have found that the early meaning of the word “hell” carried no thought of any kind of heat. It merely meant “concealed.” We have found, too, that the original Hebrew word, usually translated “hell” in English Bibles, is Sheol. Now what does Sheol mean? It simply means “a hollow place.” So the original Hebrew word perfectly corresponds with the original or early meaning of the English word “hell.” It is the common grave of dead humans--not a place of torture.

God did not invent hell; man made that for himself.

God didnt invent hell, I think 400 years before Christ. There just to be like a court where people faced trials and they went into a room with fire with a priest inside if you offered something in retribution the priest let you go and tell the people you were inocent and you were released however people with no property or goods were forced to walk into the fire and burn. That was called hell.

Hell is a word that describes a pit or abyss. It is a place where people are disconnected from God. People have taken it to a different level. Look up Hell's origins and meanings.

Hmm... God did not homicide his son. The romans and non secular leaders of his day did. God allowed it, and he did so out of love for us. besides, keep in concepts even that lack of existence replaced into no longer everlasting and Jesus now sits on the right hand of his father because the 2d premier individual contained in the universe. 2d, you're assuming there's a hell of God's invention. Scripturally talking, there is none. i wish that permits you.

I think hell is refered to as something else in the Old Testament, or in a different religious book...I forgot what it was called, sorry.

I don't get it sometimes though...say your father got mad at you, or you didn't believe him. Would he stick you in an oven forever? Or place you somewhere else forever?
