Assume that:

Humans are composed of merely matter. There is no soul. What makes a human body and mind function is merely electrical and chemical activity. There is no afterlife.

Do you think this is horrific?

Actually, no, it doesn't scare me. I have actually thought that. What if i'm wrong. I've used my intelect to pick fact from fiction just like you. But, i've reaced a conclusion that there is something after death. I've got my own proof.

It is not horrific at all. Science and Religion do the exact same thing but in different languages: they explain the world around us and give it meaning. If someone finds value in a world where man has a soul and God has a plan for that soul, then let him/her have his/her soul. If another finds meaning in logic and science, why not let him/her have that meaning? Breath of life from God or electrical and chemical activity powering my brain, I find both to be pretty miraculous.

One who believes in an afterlife has something very significant in common with one who doesn't: they both want the story of their individual lives to mean something. In one version, the story ends with death--in another, the story begins with death. A story is a story. Perhaps one person prefers a short story to an epic series.

What is horrifying about the end of a story? The loss of the main character? Or not knowing for sure what happens when the pages run out of print? Humans being composed of soulless matter is not a horrific concept. The only thing that is horrific is not knowing for sure what happens next and living in fear that someone may disprove your beliefs, whatever they may be.

It is not horrific to me. It is only a differernt way of thinking. I believe that we are both body and sou, there is God, there is hell and heaven, there is afterlife. This is what makes sense to me. Do you find this horrific? It is just a different set of beliefs.

There will come a day when we know everything for sure. Till that day comes, we can definitely respect each other and live in harmony. Till that day comes, ...

Peace

Yes, as an atheist I am more afraid of death cause it means to me the end. A minute you're here the other you're not. I do wish to continue existing in any other way than just cease to be. It can't be more horrific than that

Not in the least, especially since all the evidence shows that you have precisely and correctly described the situation. It is much more reasonable to believe in something which has determinable consequences and hence is useful for something than to believe in something that does not and isn't. But your question goes to the core of why people mistakenly believe in things such as afterlife, soul, and all the rest: it makes them feel good, and evidence be damned.

Well I know music is nothing but sound waves organized in a complex form, yet I know it was created with a purpose, and it sounds beautiful. Same thing with life itself - we may be composed of atoms, cells, electrical impulses and such, but I know we are so much beyond that.

Not horrific, but disappointed. Maybe this is an end to the illusory world that we created today of what constitute life, self, God, etc.

If that were true then we would believe something other than
what we believe now. With all of our medical technology we know
that what you said is total crap. No it is not horrific. It is a cell in
your tiny little brain that had a "chemical" activity.

Yes , indeed it is horrific .
But if so , why is Frankenstein just a story by Mary Shelly and not a living and breathing creation by mankind ?

I'm thinking about the monkey in the cage. May be the monkey is thinking ..Look at this people.. .in the cage.. Poor people.. I feel sorry for the people. There is afterlife... who knows , one day the science will prove that. or life is like a sand castle which will wash away ....

It's too good to be true.

But in the same time, it's too worse to be true. The brain while it's good at processing thought, it doesn't seem to contain long term memories.
