Yes, jockeys are not able to be on drugs. Would you want an intoxicated jockey riding your horse and increase the likeliness of the horse be guided in the wrong direction and in effect possibly endangering other horses and jockeys? Jockeys can get banned off racetracks if drugs are present in their system.

Not only disqualified if the drug use was recent, but with repeat offenses the jockey could be banned. There was such a case in the U.S. recently where a jockey was banned for the use of amphetamines after a random check.

By the way, you say that the horse does all the work. This is not true. I have statistics showing that a bad jockey can cause a favorite to underperform; several in my study were so bad I would always ignore betting on them when they rode favorites and bet the next best horse, especially if a good jockey was riding it. This tactic on my part was necessary due to the fact that even though these bad jockeys seemingly got the best horse more than once in the day, they could not get them to finish in the money at all. In my stats this usually happened at the smaller tracks more often than the bigger ones.

The jockey does far more than simply "point the horse is the right direction".

Drugs are banned for both horses and jockeys. Not just performance enhancing drugs, but also recreational drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Drugs like these could hamper a jockeys judgement and cause him to make a mistake that could result in injury to horse or rider.

Keiran Fallon has recently been banned from riding in France (and Ireland) after testing positive for traces of cocaine.

Jockeys are also randomly breathalysed for alcohol, and a few jockeys have been stood down (that is banned from riding for that one day) after showing up positive results. It is not always that the jockey has been drinking that day, sometimes they have a few the night before and it just hasn't cleared their system by morning. However, there is definitely a drinking culture in racing, with several jockeys admitting to being alcoholics - Timmy Murphy, Keiran Fallon, etc.

Jockeys are tested for drugs and alcohol every race day before the races begin. If a jockey fails the jockey loses his mounts for that days races. If a jockey has more than one bad test he can be fined, lose his jockey license, and be required to go to a drug rehab program.

First and Second place horses are drug tested after the races to make sure they were not injected with any performance enhancing drugs. If by chance either horse shows a positive drug test. The horse that tests positive is automatically disqualified and loses all purse money won for that race. The trainer of the horse is fined and can lose his license for a few days up to a year or more.

yes a jockey on drugs can be suspended or even have his license removed because the jockey is trying to control a 1,000 animal who is probably a very young horse and is barely trained in a race with 10 oth similar horse/rider combinations. Thats a very dangerous situation to begin with and to add a drugged jockey to the mix is just asking for a lot of danger. Jockeys and horses can be hurt, killed or euthanized.

jockeys are not allowed to take illegal drugs and would be punished if they did some horses could guide themselves but a jockey must be in the saddle.ask pat Valenzuela about this he has been set down enough times and today he is still a great rider when clean and sober.

Jockeys are suspended for up to a year or more and sometimes are banned and have to be reinstated.

The jocket has more to do than that. What about race tactics, sometimes they're the most important of all.
