Look at the terms of your visa. If it says no recourse to public funds that includes the health services too. Although they will treat you in the event of an emergency you would have to pay for it if you do not have travel insurance.

The United Kingdom operates using the National Health Service which means doctors appointments and hospital visits are free. If you can find a National Health Dentist (NHS) you are firstly very lucky and secondly if you do find one register and you will get a lot of treatment free.

The UK does have private medical care, but for residents and those working legally the health care is free. You will need to visit your local doctor in your town and register with them.

Hope this helps :-)

ps being an Australian you are automatically entitled to Doctor's care via the NHS. My hubby is an Aussie and he spent 2 years in the UK with me before we were married and received all the necessary health and dentistry free of charge.

The UK has specific reciprocal agreements with a number of EU countries to allow treatment for overseas visitors, but I have no idea whether such an agreement exists with Australia.

You need to check with the NHS or your embassy, and not just assume this benefit extends to all visitors, because not every nationality will automatically be able to make use of the facilities free of charge.

why do you think we end up with loads of illigal immigrants, its free, but shouldnt be unless you pay your taxes. You wont find a dentist free, very hard to get one at all. Drs you have to register and be accepted before they will give you anything. So you need permanent residence to, for home address. There is also private medical treatment, for quicker service, and nicer surrounding clinics and hospitals.

You'll need travel insurance as they will need to reimburse the NHS. If you don't have it, you will get treatment and if you're paying national insurance through work I don't think anyone will care.
