Many countries produce good wines, trying to state the best is like trying to state what is the best language: pointless.

The tastes of each area are evident in each good vinification: french and italians are dramatically different from the new world. Some US wines are outstanding (expensive!!!! ouch), other are just --- hmm average. same goes for the other countries.

I find that Chili and South Africa - both in whites and reds - have some excellent surprises in the average price category. For reds, Argentina is worth a try. For the old world, Spain has some very good ones not very well known.

Italy and France are very popular, and extremely sofisticated in the wine making. It is less industrialized that california (where for all but exceptional wines, the industrialization is such that flavours are standardized now), and have retained more personality in the small growers. Having the opportunity to tour vinyards is a wonderful vacation...

it is really impossible to say what is the best wine. it is a subjective taste. most french ines are 100% of the grape varietal that they claim to be. california wines and other regional wines can be up to 20% other wines.

Europeans have the most experience in that (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Hungary... etc.), but Californian and Australian wines are ok too.

Personally, I like cheap semi-sweet wine... :)
