Certain veggies and fruits are fine to give as treats, but should not make up a large part of his daily food intake. Some fruits and veggies are toxic, even deadly, to dogs. A few fruits and veggies that you should stay away from include: prunes, grapes, and raisins; citrus fruits; the seeds, stems, and leaves of apples, peaches, plums, apricots, and pears; potatoes (sweet potatoes are okay in small quantities), and their stems & leaves; avocados; cherries; broccoli; onions and garlic; and of course, chocolate and other sweets are on the list of toxic foods for dogs as well.
meat has to be included in the diet for the protein. I feed raw but meat is a big factor if you want a healthy dog

Dogs LOVE love love love love meat. They can't speak it and say so, but in general it's true. Try giving them a variety of things. In terms of vitamins, heck you can probably give your dogs actual vitamin tablets and not have them become vitamin-deficient, and then feed them whatever, but I just don't think it's fair to take meat away from a dog. I know a lot of commercial dog food is terrible, but check online, there are some really really REALLY great ones, natural and just amazing. Good luck! Home-made diets, if followed properly, are also good. But only veggies and such? I don't know, I don't like that, much less my meat-loving doggie :o)

My animals love cooked vegetables and fruit, I have a friend whose dog will eat raw broccli, cauliflour and onions.
I've seen vegetarian dog food at the health food store. But I don't know anyone with a vegetarian dog.
I don't think dogs are evolved to thrive on a meatless diet, and I know if I tried it with mine I'd get eaten!

Our Staffy used to love eating oranges. He would become frantic at the smell of one. He also loved apples and pears. We used to feed him a mixture of raw chicken with rice, spinach, beans and carrot (not potatoes, they can't digest it - just comes out the same way it goes in). He lived to a healthy age of 15 before his kidneys packed it in. He was a good dog.

Yes often a vegetarian diet for your animal is better for them. I read about a woman in my state that had a dog that was alive well and active at the age of 33 and no that is not dog years. She raised the dog vegetarian and always made his food for him as well as treats. She keeps him active and happy.
My dogs love baby carrots themselves. They are very good for them and they are crunchy and dogs loves that.

i wouldnt suggest it. dogs are carniverous in the wild. the ideal ratio of food for dogs is 40% meat 30%starch and 30%veggies. there are some vegetables that are not good for dogs like onions. if your dogs like veggies, go ahead and give them all kinds just dont cut out the meat.

My dog is an overweight Aussie. Along with her restricted diet dog food, she eats string beans or peas. Peas have more sugar in them tho'. A lot of show dogs are fed veggies to reduce their weight before a show.
This is an excellent article about "vegan" dogs:http://www.vegan.org/going_vegan/veggie_dogs/index.html
