i have two cats. one has been having a squinty eye. mainly when he is tired or just getting up. i am hoping it is just hair/ fur in his eye. (long hair cat) he is still very active, and still loves food. is there a really good eye drop i can try to flush his eye out? he may just have a cold to. has a cold wet runny nose. allergies? i'm probably just being a paranoid mama but they are my babies. any suggestion could help

Hold the cat and open the eye to see if there is anything in it. You can use a soft tissue to get out whatever it is. Plain water is fine to wash the eye out with. But only if there is something in the eye itself. Look under the top lid and pull the bottom of the eye out so you can look in there also. It could be that another cat scratched his eye and he will be fine in a few days. If the cat doesn't recover within 3-4 days, I would take him to the vet to have his eye checked with instruments. They can see things we can't with the naked eye. Good Luck!

Take a good look at his eye and see if you see any signs of irritation or anything else wrong other than squintiness. Does he fuss at it? Does he show any sign that it hurts or bothers him?

If everything checks out, chances are it's nothing. Keep an eye on him to see if it changes in any way.

On the other hand, a vet office visit is only $35 or so. If that's what it takes to put your mind at ease, it's probably money well spent. If you have a regular vet, you can usually call them and ask if a problem is something you need to come in for, but in this case "squinty eye" is pretty non-specific. They'd probably just tell you to come in and let them have a look.

If he is still eating well and active, he may be catching a cold. Get a warm, wet wash cloth, and clean around his eye. It is okay to give him some Robitussin, (1cc per lb). I know it sounds crazy, but it works. I used to work at a pet store, and that is what our vet recommend we do when we had a dog or cat with a cold (since we had sooo many animals, we couldn't take each one to a 75-100 dollar vet appointment). Do it once in the morning, and once at night until it has cleared up. If you know any one who recently had a sick kid (but is now well) you could aslo use amoxicillin.

You aren't telling us how long this has been going on. If it's been going on for more than a couple of weeks I'd take him to the vet.

I've had animals get scratches on their eyes from playing. Eyes heal pretty quickly but can get ulcered and are very irritating. Scratches on the eye are easy to deal with but you do need to see the vet to get the medicine.

If it's only just started, I'd watch him for a few days to see if it gets better or he seems uncomfortable. Animals do get fur in thier eyes and they don't have fingers to get it out!

And please don't put anything in your cats eyes that hasn't been approved by your vet!

Is the eye really runny as well? if so it may be conjunctivitis.

Also if the eye is cloudy take it to a vet soon, my sister's cat's eye randomly turned cloudy, she took it to the vet and they told her if she had waited 2 more days the cat would have lost the use of the eye, unless it's cloudy or really runny or seems to cause a problem for the kitty I wouldn't worry about it too much. (And nothings wrong worrying about your babies =))

Cat flu.
You need to take your cat to the vet for medication.

EDIT: Also, your cat may have a scratch or something under his 3rd eyelid. If that's the case, I do NOT recommend trying to take something out yourself. You will need to take him to the vet for a local anesthesia in the eye so he won't feel anything as the vet lifts the 3rd eyelid.

I would have this cats eye examined by a veterinarian, eyes are extremely sensitive and needed to be treated as such. Good Luck.

if it has just woken up so ya it is normal but in the pharmacy we get drops which are not too expensive. if it continues then take it to the vet. And if he has long hair so cut them just which are close to the eye.
