"the past is history" well that is clear.. our past has already occured right? so it becomes a history...already happened before.
"the future is a mystery"- you dont know what the future has in store for you, whether its good or bad, u know nothing of it. so thats why its a mystery, a suspense, as to what might happen next.
"The here and now is a gift.
That is why it's called the present" this very moment, our present time, is a gift to us, and we should use it fully, and enjoy it with our whole heart. it is a boon to us. that is why it is called our "present"(gift).

okay in the first line it states that the past is history...in this 'history' is referred to as being gone, unchangeable, no longer tangible
second line states the future, a mystery...it means that the future is unknown, like a mystery....you believe that it will end up a certain way, but like all mysteries there is always a sudden twist or a suprise ending....so the future is a mystery
....so the here and now is a gift---means that you should be lucky or blessed that you are here today because like the second line says, the future is a mystery....meaning you might not have a tomorrow.
and that is why it's called the present =)
I interpret the whole thing as....don't worry about yesterday and especially about tomorrow because the way life goes...you might not be there tomorrow....so enjoy today and what it has to offer.

Carpe Diem- Sieze the day!
Is what comes to mind for me.
Although at the same time I think of it this way for myself.
The past is history, yet we learn from histories don't we.
The future will never be written or pre-determined which is why we may refer to it as a mystery.
The gift of the here & now, our present being, will determine how the mystery of the future unfolds with many of our own decisions being made based on our own history or past.
The present of now is what we shape to grow and continue onto the future, yet beware the past;
History has a tendency to repeat itself.

It is right to say that "The past is history". Not just because it it gone, but because we can learn from it. Learn from the mistakes and success that we have had.
People have the same notion about the future... a "mystery", the "unseen", the "yet to be". We share a common belief in that.
The present, too. We simply live it because someone up there gave us the chance and call it "gift" to see the day again.
This is how I view this quotation.

Live for the now. Seize the day!
We are sometimes caught up in the past or we are so concerned about the future that we forget to make the most of the blessings and opportunities that we have now.

In my own perspective,
Life is full of suprises and things may not happen the way we anticipate them, but what we are today is partly because of our past. Do not dwell on the past and don't worry too much about the future. Live life to its fullest and just enjoy most of it. Carpe diem.

what is over (tha past) cannot be changed, only remembered and used as reference.
we don't know what the future will be since it all depends on the choices we have yet to make. every choice eliminates millions of possibilities and opens up millions of new ones so it is constantly changing
what is going on this very second is the chance we have to do our best.
that is the best gift we have, to be able to control what goes on around us and grasp each opportunity.

we are blessed with the current. Live life as you know it now and with the situations you are currently dealing with. Don't worry about the future. Don't dwell in the past. What you are now is the gift.
Time is so amazing.

To be truly candid? I think the quote is weak as a wet noodle in that it truly says nothing worthy of thought.
