here r the laws:

if electrical- permit needed, installing or removing
plumbing- same
demo work- none needed if the first 2 do not apply

u will need plans if moving walls or any type of structural work is to be done....u will need a lic. electrician if u can not do the work ur self and want to accept the responsibility in case of fire or other problems.....u will need lic hvac for same reason as stated above........lic plumber needed unless u know the codes and accept the responsibility.....

keep in mind, any work done which involves, electric, plumbing, hvac, or structural or cost more than $ 500.00 requires a permit...

another thing to remember is that if u do more than 50% of work that totals 1/2 or more of the value of the house, ( tax value) then u must bring the whole house up to local and state codes! this can get very costly.......

lic. gen. contractor

You should contact your municipality (city, county, township, etc) for permit information. Ask for the Building and Safety Department. Or Code Enforcement. Every city has different codes, some are more strict than others. In my city, we need to get a permit when we replace our water heater!

You really shouldn't start tearing things apart willy-nilly without proper permits. If you ever want to sell the home in the future, you may have problems if the remodeling was not properly permitted. They could fine you and make you return the home to its original condition, at your own cost. Also, some insurance might be void if the work you do somehow damages the structural integrity of the home. Work with a licensed contractor, unless you are really sure of what you are doing. This is your home, probably the biggest investment of your life, the shelter for you and your loved ones...don't skimp on the quality of the improvements.

it depends on your area. Some places require permits based on amounts of money that will be put into the house or based on the amount it will raise the value of the home. If you have electrical done they will need permits. The contractor will get that. plumbing is the same. if all you are doing is sheet rock and tile work and you are doing it yourself then a permit can probably be avoided. Check with your city clerk and see regulations for that area and go from there.

General rule of thumb when it comes to renovations in the home --- if it is over $50 you need a permit. Check with your local code inspector to be certain.

I believe minor remodeling does not require permits.
Here's a website where you can ask more specific questions of people who know what they are talking about.
