it can educate you, inform you , give you a laugh, various positive things, if you do it in moderation.
like anything, you need to be a "good" consumer, and do it in moderation, otherwise you will be taking in meaningless things, and ignoring other experiences in life,,

Advantage:
Relieving stress from throughout the day.
Entertainment.
Learning new things (i.e. Discovery channel, History channel).
Disadvantage:
Having to tolerate all the new reality shows.
Being bombarded with advertisements every 8 minutes or so.
Getting fed only the news they want you to hear.

For me, the biggest advantage is learning about things. I love the Discovery Channel. The biggest disadvantage is the waste of time watching commercials.

Advantage of watching TV is keep informed - which is the key to rule the todays world as knowledge is the power in this millenium but watching time to time & after periodical gap only.
Disadvantage is the damages to eyes & ear due to more watching and listening at high volumes so try to avoid misuse

disadvantage: being desensitized and brainwashed into an ultra-liberal worldview. (assuming you watch "typical" tv) This usually happens very slowly over the course of many years. People allow their values and opinions to be determined by others. (and believe me, those hollywood people do it purposely. they are very politically active)
The only advantage I can see is if you watch educational tv.(history channel, discovery, etc)

You learn a lot of things watching TV, news, current events, new technologies, health matters, etc., and you got plenty of fun too.
The disadvantages: you view scenes that are bad to the children
too many advertisements, waste of time viewing commercials and it's bad to your eyes...

If you don't want to give attention to your guest in home, you can watch the tv whenever they're talking to you. That is only one advantage!!!!!!!
