its simple, a dog knows that you are its master and it obeys you while a cat thinks you are its servent and it tolerates you.

I think Chipper summed it up very well. Dogs are very obedient and docile with their owners and you can train the intelligent species very easily however cats sustain their attitude and 'feline pride' for some reason. It is not odd for a domesticated cat to wander off for some days and then come back as if nothing had happened.
Cheers.

Dogs spend their lives trying to thank their owners for letting them live in their houses -- by being guard dogs, by fetching balls, by lying at their owner's feet, etc. They are constantly "afraid" of disappointing their owners, so they are willing to be dressed up, clipped in weird ways, and made to do tricks in order to assure they keep getting fed.

Cats, however, believe that they have the absolute right to be fed and cared for simply by virtue of the fact that they are in your home. You brought them into your house, so you are automatically obligated to feed and care for them. The cat has absolutely no obligation to do anything other than let you know whether the food you provide is good enough or not.

Dogs are more obedient and cats are more independant. I agree with the first answer, I love my cat to death but I do realize that I go to work everyday to pay for her apartment and feed her... cats don't have owners, they have servants lol. Dogs aim to please you and cats want you to please them. A dog will love almost everyone and cats want you to earn their trust. My cat will sniff a guest after several visits and only then if it decides it likes my friend will she let them pet her... I think it's quite interesting to observe.

a dog is loyal to its master and will always be there for him but a cat, though you feed him can go away if it finds a better master.

Dogs actually evolved to be pets. They went from following us to scavenge our campsites, to looking cute and begging for scraps. Now we feed them, vaccinate them, protect them, and even find them mates. Sweet deal. In exchange, dogs make us happy. It's their ecological niche.
Cats act aloof and mysterious, in exchange for worship. They follow us because we attract rats. They approach us because . . . who knows.
