I have a 10+ year old Llaso Apso and lately he's been coughing a lot. I'm not sure if it is phlegm or if it's something else. Is this a normal thing for old dogs? Other than this, he's been himself, not sick or anything. What could if be?

your dog is old and as you know dogs live from 10-15 years. so coughing is normal if it is cold outside but if it's hot and he's still coughing keep him in a warm place and if it continues, take him to the vet.

Coughing in an older dog can mean heart trouble. Or, I would suspect Kennel Cough if the dog has been around other dogs. Kennel Cough can be bad for an older dog as it can lead to secondary infections. Please take your dog to the vet to get his heart checked. You can make the dog reproduce the cough by rubbing his throat. If it's Kennel Cough he will cough. If it's heart trouble he will not. Your dog is telling you something by coughing. This is not normal. Good Luck.

Whenever a dog coughs and something comes out, and that's the end of it, then he should be okay, but you are saying it keeps going. The dog needs to go to a vet for a heartworm test, and for the vet to listen to its lungs for the beginnig of pneumonia. You can't take chances with dogs because they can't pucker up and spit like you and I can, so they can get fluid settling in there easilly. But if it hasn't had a heartworm vaccine, they can get heart worms from putting their noses in other dog's poo-poo.

Since your dog is a senior, and coughing can be a symptom of more serious illness, I would recommend getting your dog to a vet. It may be something easy to fix or it could be something more serious. Your vet should be able to tell you.

Have a vet check him out, it could be very dangerous and if he is coughing it up it means its coming from his lungs... you dont want it to fill his lungs... That would be no air would get to his lungs. Get to the vet as soon as you can, just to have it checked out.
