First of all, i am so sick of hearing people saying rude things about the Philippines. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with this question, as it is legitimate. I'm talking about people who say things like the guy who said something about it could be a garbage dump. You know, just because there are problems with poverty in the Philippines doesn't mean it is country without a great deal of natural beauty and wonderful people. And if you are an American and you're talking bad about the Philippines, shame on you. Filipinos are often some of the most respectful people in the world toward Americans and don't tell me it is just because of money because it isn't just about that. I've been there nearly 20 times and know what I'm talking about. I have many Filipinos who are true friends.

As far as what will they do, of course they will have new fighters and as always they will depend on the USA for military support in the event of any problems. The USA has the ability to strike anywhere in the world. We can easily deploy troops for land, sea, and air from our bases in Japan and South Korea if needed. Of course, I won't be making those decisions, but I would hope that if the Philippines ever needed American support, we would be there 100%.

Mahal kita Pinay!

Short term: the Philippines has no real plans to defend its airspace. The main concern for the government now is the Communist infestation/insurgency (the longest-running of its type in the world) and the Islamic extremists in the southern regions.

Long Term: They plan to acquire new fighter aircraft from either China, Russia, USA or Sweden/EU, but the fruition of any plan depends on the economic situation and political stability of the country.

Do also note that the Philippines has no significant surface-to-air missile capabilities for either long or short term.

No need to defend. Anyway no other country will try to invade the Philippines. What do you get in invading the Philippines?. It will be just waste of war materiel and amunitions. And besides, the Philippines poses no threat to any other country. The Filipinos are too busy fighting with each other, that they don't have time to be involved in an international conflict.

Probably if other countries are looking for a huge garbage dump. Then the Philippines could be useful.

One wonders what it might wish to defend its airspace from. There is no country which presently or foreseeably poses a threat to Philippine airspace. Air power there would mostly be useful for engaging Muslim insurgents ravaging the southern islands.
