They are totally harmless, give them some water by putting a glass down in the corner by any doorway, and they will bring you prosperity

If you want to find out who used to live in your house you may start by getting a look at the abstract that goes with the deed to the property. If you don't have it then it is probably available at the county recorder's office. This will tell you who owned the house not necessarily who lived there.

If you can find an old neighbor they may be able to tell you more about who lived there than anything else.

I once worked in a haunted building it was listed on the register of haunted buildings in the United States. I did hear footsteps when I was the only one in the building. Beyond that I never heard anything else. There were supposed to be the sounds of a baby crying but I never heard them. Oh well it didn't bother me.

It's easy to find out who lived in your house. Just check out the title office. You can do it online most everywhere and just for a nominal fee. Once you have names, check them out on the web or in your local paper data base. But I really wouldn't worry about it... It's usually people who are alive who hurt others, not people who are dead...
Are they nice ghosts?

Dont worry about it. No such thing as ghost. But dont forget to lock your doors, lots of criminals out there.
