I know Los Angeles is considered to be the film capital of the U.S. but NYC also has a lot of film. However, there are more prominent in theater and some TV. Thus, bringing me to the question, which place would it be "easier" to get an agent for screenwriting? Furthermore, aside from schools such as NYU, USC, UCLA, is there any schools in the LA or NY area that would be beneficial to go to and that are still a lot cheaper than those other schools? NYFA in either LA or NY perhaps? What internships can you take that will help in screenwriting? Thank you.

Most everyone I know in the business had a preference towards NYC or LA before they even moved out - it's a completely different vibe and living-style in both cities. The way I see it, a job is part of your week but your location is where you are all the time.

Either place it's going to take you at least a year to meet people and get established, so make sure you have enough money to pay to live for a few months (or a backup skill/job). Or, be open-minded to trying other opportunities - I know actors and writers who have worked as waiters and other low-paying jobs in LA for 5-10 years and haven't gotten anywhere in their careers; I also know people who have taken a job outside their interests and ended up being very successful (and they can act/write/produce on the side and are glad to have quality people to work with in the area). So either way, come to LA (or NYC) because you want to be here and not because you're looking for fame.

Definitely Los Angeles. There's a lot of work there and it's cheaper to live. The USC screenwriting dept is one of the best. If you already have some college under your belt, I would also consider working hard to find a job as writer's assistant for a TV show, etc. If you meet the right people that can give you a break, you may save yourself a lot of money and time by going directly to the source and getting some real writing experience under your belt first thing. Good luck!

Both cities are good locations for this field. I think LA would be better for you because you are more likely to meet the decision makers face to face in LA. Hollywood is a tight-knit circle of people that you will want to get into. It's harder to do that when you are 3,000 miles away.

A friend of mine moved to the West Coast to pursue screenwriting. She is attending Chapman University in Orange for their program. You might want to check that out.
