I have two great danes. And the only reason any dog would "vicious" with a child is if the dog is not use to children. Meaning the dog was not raised with children. A lot of children do not know how to "approach" a dog because their parent have not taught them or their parents do not know how to approach a dog.
A Child usually comes off 2 ways to a dog that is not use to kids, one: overbearing, meaning wanting to pull, touch, or pet the dog before the dog is ready (feels comfortable with the child) or two: the child is afraid of the dog, which in that case the dog can sense. Either way the dog is not going to respond very well to the child if the dog was not raised with children. My two danes have not been around kids much, so when they do come in contact with a child. I direct the child (if they want to pet my dog) on how to approach my dog. If I see that my dog is not interested in the child, then I tell the child I'm sorry but maybe we can "hi" another day. I don't force my dogs to interact with children because I did not raise them with children.
Great Danes are absolutely wonderful dogs, raised correctly and with kids, they will be a loyal best friend for rest of their lives. One thing to keep in mind is a Great Dane's size. They are a giant breed, so "play" can get rough because of the size.(let's face it: these dogs are BIG and can hurt unintentionally!). But once again a well trained and raised Dane is a wonderful companion to all ages. Danes absolutely love their humans and all they want to do is be near them. I will have no other breed!
They aren't called "gentle giants" for nothing and I have never known a Dane to bite any person or dog without a great deal of provocation. Most Danes will simply walk away when children get too rough.

Your friends Great Dane is viscous towards children or people in general because it was not socialized at ALL around people/children well enough or at all.
Great Danes are fantastic pets (friend owned one) but do need socialization; just like any other breed of dog.
Remember, Danes are very large (XL) dogs and can get very excited if people come and visit. If there are children around, it is going to be very, very easy for a Dane to knock a small child over due to their massive size.
They may have TREATED it well but that doesn't mean they socialized their dog well enough. Any breed can be great with kids and/or adults but, THEY NEED TO BE SOCIALIZED AS A PUPPY.

Great Danes are known to be dog aggressive. This shocked me to find out because you never hear of it. But they can be very dog aggressive.
The Great Dane is also number eight in the top ten dog breeds that attack humans. Again this is something that people are not aware off.
The information I have given you is accurate. It's all on record. They are lovely big dogs but with attitude. Ofcourse you must treat dogs individually but facts are facts.

You dont say how old the dog or kids are. And you didnt say if they got it as a puppy or if its a rescue. you also didnt say which came first dog or kids. All of these could be factors. Also is it just with the kids that its nasty. Great danes are from what ive experienced the most beautiful loving dogs with kids. I have had them with kids of all ages and the only thing that has happened is the occasional knock over from a large dog that couldnt stop or turn quick enough.(once they get moving look out).I would suggest finding a good trainer or animal behaviourlist to help your vet should be able to refer you to one in your area.

When I had to take my son to the ER when he fell and cut his head , we shared a room with a boy that was maybe 4 yr. old and his head and face was all bandaged up his mother said he was playing in the backyard at her friends house with her great Dane and the next thing she knew he had the boys head in his mouth mauling him.
That was the first I had heard of an aggressive GD but after I checked it out , They are in the top ten of people attacks . I would not have a GD around children. I don't think people are properly socializing them or people are not breeding good temperament into them.

Great Danes tend to be sweet, gentle dogs, but people forget that they are HUGE. I wouldn't recommend them for small children because a playful, huge dog can cause accidents and possibly hurt a small child. They're great for older kids, teens, and adults, but for kids under 6 or 7, I wouldn't really recommend it.
That's strange that your friend's dog was vicious. Maybe the children were pulling its tail or irritating him, or maybe the dog wasn't being vicious, but just rowdy and playful. And of course, in every breed, you're going to have a few vicious ones.

If it is vicious to children than it was not raised correctly by your "friends" or your friends are lying.
Great Danes have a very pleasant disposition and demeanor and are great with children.
