Wisdom teeth were originally a replacement set of molars for later life. Before dental hygene, molars, which are large and flat, rotted out of the mouth first.

It is interesting to note that many people now are starting to not develope full sets of wisdom teeth, some even never developing wisdom teeth at all.

Usually if your upper and lower jaw have enough space for these 4 third molars (so called wisdom teeth if they are impacted), they usually erupt into your oral cavity around the age 17-21 years old. The order for the tooth erupting depends on the order of tooth bud developing. Wisdom teeth come in much later than other teeth because their crown completed the last.

Since that is considered to be the age when people become wiser, third molars gained the nickname, "wisdom teeth." Actually, they are no different than any other tooth except that they are the last teeth to erupt, or grow into the mouth. They are just as useful as any other tooth if they grow in properly, have a proper bite relationship, and have healthy gum tissue around them. Unfortunately, this does not always happen.
