You can train them yourself. If you want him to be nicer to people, get him around them more. You can do this in public and he will still protect your home. Or, if you want him to be nicer to people in your home, have more people come over. I have a dobie and trained him to be polite but protective. You can do it, it just takes patience.

The earlier you take your dog to a group training class, the better, especially for a GSD (German Shepherd Dog) Puppies need to be exposed to as many people, dogs and experiences as possible before they are 5 months old. This is a critical developmental time for them. Training is more than just teaching your dog to do "things", it is teaching your dog you will keep him/her safe, it will teach you and your dog to work together as a team, it will help your dog make good choices about what is dangerous and what isn't and help protect you from lawsuits in the future.
Dogs that aren't well socialized, espeically GSDs will often go into action when they deem a danger is present, such as when strangers come to the house. Strangers like your children's new friends, a new boyfriend, etc. Not good.

Socialize your dog. Take it to group classes.

There are obedience classes all over the US and I'm sure some in your area. Prices vary, but we found our trainer thru a recommendation from our local Agility club and the price of this lady are way better than anyone I could find in the phone book. Yes, it can help your dog become a well mannered pet, but it requires persistence in training and follow up on your part to really make it work. Basically, a good trainer helps train you how to properly train your dog.

There have got to be hundreds of classes in LA. Go to google and type in "dog clubs in LA", you will come up with a lot. And a class wont make your dog anything. It will (hopefully) teach you how to work with your dog to teach him things. In the end its you that will make your dog a very good dog.
