(continuing from the question) advice could the physician offer the affected couple before their pregnancy?

Usually they would refer the patient to a genetic counsilor. But they would just tell you the chances of inheriting the mutation and what profalactic measures you might take to get ready for the occurance of the genetic defect. IE: If you have the MTHFR gene mutation, which causes excess clotting due to abnormal homocysteine levels, they may put you on low molecular weight heperin during your pregnancy.

Sorry I just saw that you wrote before your pregnancy, they can take a tissue sample, (usually blood) and see if the woman also has the genetic defect. Good Luck,

I think it totally depends on the defect. Some conditions have graver consequences than others. I think it is only proper medical practice that a woman disclose all genetic anomalies if her family history warrants so, to her physician FIRST! Dr.'s are wonderful people, but they are not mind readers. If a family defect does accrue, there are a ton of testing that most dr's can do and check for. don't forget the father in this, just because there is a family defect on mothers side, fathers should be checked also.
