Yes they are very good with children. Socialization is the key to any dogs developement however. I have 2 GSD's both of which are trained in police service work and they both love kids of any age. My kids can do anything with my dogs and the dogs are VERY tolerable.I very frequently get invited to come to area schools to give demos for different aged kids and to give talks I have three 10 yr old triplet boys and a 12 yr old daughter and my dogs would give their lives for them. Their even very tolerable of children that they are meeting for the first time. Even small toddlers can simply walk up and my dogs are very accepting of them and will start to lick their faces. I can be napping on the sofa and my kids will come in with their friends and my dogs will just sit there next to where ever I'm laying. Even if my dogs have never seen the new kid before. The only thing they do is go over and give a quick sniff and nudge their hand in the hopes of getting an ear scratch. Grown ups on the other hand have to be let in by me or the wife. If they just were to try to walk in they would have a slight problem But for the most part they are very social dogs. But at the same time both of them love to work and are two of the best k9 partners I've had. .But keep in mind they are a very high energy dog and require training and are much happier if they have a job. I.E Obiediance classes, agility classes, chasing ball or a frisby. They need physical and mental stimulation otherwise they will get into alot of mischif and cane possibly be distructive to your yard or house out of anxiety from lack of activity.

Shepherds can run hot and cold. If you go to a breeder and see the parents, you might be OK. We had 4 of them over time as I was growing up. The female was very protective, almost like we were her puppies. The second was also protective, literally like a police dog--he walked his beat around the property every night, and was like a little brother. He'd put up with a lot, but God forbid a stranger came up to the house. The third was almost a show dog. He was also very protective, but had a sweet disposition. The last one was mean. We also got him from a breeder, but he was biting even as a puppy, and not just puppy biting.

The best dog I could recommend would be a lab or a golden retriever. The lab/Weimeraner mix we have now is the most loving dog I've ever seen. My sister-in-law brought her 4 grandchildren over once, and Molly was thrilled. She was gentle with all of them, and even though she weighs about 95 pounds and they were all crowded into the living room, she never hurt anyone. When she took a treat from my great niece, she was frightened because she had dogs at home, but Molly took it with her lips instead of biting at it, she was so careful.

German shepherds can be good family dogs, but I wouldn't recommend them for children, especially young children, because they are protective, large dogs who aren't always good with kids. For young children, you should probably get a smaller dog. A large dog can cause a small child to get hurt. You might consider a shetland sheepdog (they're great family dogs, but they do bark.) Pugs and miniature dachshunds are great. If you're looking for a large dog, and your children aren't too young or small in size, you might consider a labrador retriever, golden retriever, or standard sized poodle. They're all sweet, athletic dogs that are great for families.

I wouldn't recommend a terrier of even kind because they get so nervous and aren't always good with kids.

Of course, it depends not just on breed, but on the dog's past and how you raise the dog. You'll probably want to get a dog when it's still a puppy so you can raise it to be good with kids.

Out of 1-5 (1 being best with children, 5 being worst around them), German Shepherds ranked a 2.
Here is a list of dog breeds, and their ranking with reliability around children:

I would not advise them although of course there must be gentle ones .
Unless you live in the country and you work out of doors I think a little dog is much more fun : he can sit on your lap and be played with more easily and does not make such a mess.when he has dirty feet
All breeders will say theirs are good but beware of the overbred dogs ie. with the same grandfather mother etc they will quite obviously tend to be not right in the head ...that is why humans do not marry family members but breeders, to win cups for looks, will do this , for my part I think it is criminal !!!
Try to get a cross bred where you know the parents.
Good luck

German shepherds are loving loyal dogs. The lifespan is not so good however. 6-8 years on the average.

I owned a German Shepard and he was really good with everyone, he didn't like anyone he didn't know to get in his face, he actually bit my cousin, but I would get in his face all the time and pick on him and he never bit me, I think that would go for most dogs, they say that Golden Retreivers are good with people, but my aunt has one and doesn't like kids at all, but loves older people, so it all depends on the dog, I know that most female dogs actually become attached to the baby and will be very protective of the baby.

I had a shepard and she was absolutely wonderful with both my children. Gentle giant!
Another good breed is an english staff. My fiance had him grow up with him lil girl and is an awsome dog. When I first layed eyes on him my 1st thought was.... You've got no hope of bringing him to my party, but I wouldn't look back now. Very boystress, but a gem.

GSD's are ok for children if properly socialized and trained. Only problem is because of their size they may unintentionally injure a child when they are being boisterous.

No. I would not trust my children around them. My father in-law has one and he is not trust worthy. I knew him for 5 years then one day I went to pet him and he tried to bite me , for no reason. I have also known 2 people attacked by GS's when they were kids not related.
Boxers are great with kids and also very good guard dogs. Some would not bite an intruder but mine would they have very good protection instinct.
