I have a one year old black lab that I have raised from a puppy. He always had a very good personality and in my opinion was the passive one between my two dogs. I never encouraged him to be aggressive and never abused him. In all he was in a very happy, loving home. Within the past week he bit 3 different people, all three very different incidents. We had to surrender him to the humane society rather than risk another bite or lawsuit. Why the sudden aggression? What makes a dog turn?

There's no way to tell without more details. Dogs that have always been nonaggressive don't just turn that way for no reason. The most likely reasons are a change in health and sudden stress in the environment.

We had a dog that bit my husband when he got laid off and we had to move in with a friend while we were in fear of our house being repo'ed. We moved her to a friend's home in Dallas where things were quiet and low-stress; she's been there for 5 years now and never shown another bit of aggression.

Did the humane society confiscate your dog? If not, did you tell the humane society your dog had bitten people? I really, really hope you did and that you gave them as much detail as possible because your dog's problems may not get resolved if people aren't informed. Without that information, more people are likely to get bitten, maybe children next time! Please, please call the shelter and let them know. It is possible they will euthanize your dog, but the only reason he is biting is because he is sick or unhappy, so something needs to be done.

I'm really sorry this happened to you. It hurts so much to have to give up a dog, especially feeling like he suddenly turned into a stranger.

It could have been due to lack of socialization. Dogs can become aggressive to strangers if they weren't raised to think that their presence was okay by being around a lot of new people. Even so, you should properly introduce people to your dogs. I'm sorry for your loss and hope that the people who were bitten are okay.

more detail on what happened with the 3 different people might be able to tell why. my dog never bit anyone, but she bit 2 people on two different stories too, but her story was that she was pregnant. maybe a big change around her environment made her more aggressive or scared that she wanted to dominate.

Give more detail on the 3 situations and I could offer a answer to your question. It could have been a hundred different reasons why he bit those people,

its fairly safe to assume that he is sick.......they usually get aggressive all of a sudden to due illness. Don't feel too bad, I am sure he was a nice dog....there is something going on with him that you can't help.

Did you ever take him to a vet, to see if there's an underlying cause behind the sudden change in behavior? That's something I would've considered.
