Depends on where you're going. If you're going someplace super duper windy (antarctica, iceland, very high altitudes) you need a mountaineering tent... they can withstand 70 mph winds, and believe it or not, that can definitely come in handy. If you camp a lot, don't skimp on tent quality. North Face, MSR, Marmot, REI, Walrus... those are all the higher end brands. Check out REI.com before buying a tent. A tent is not just a tent.. all of them are different and have many different qualities to offer.
Are you taking it backpacking? (hauling it on your back to a remote location in the back country?) If you are, you'll need a tent as light as possible.
Are you going to be somewhere with a lot of rain? If you are, you'll need something thats been tested over and over again for leaks. (there is NOTHING worse than a wet tent).
Are you going to be somewhere with a lot of wind? Better make sure you get one thats been tested in those conditions. (In the windiest conditions, I've seen tents (even staked down tents, with gear inside) blow away.
Just going to the lake for some family camping? Get a heavier duty one, thats easy to set up and can stand up to general wear and tear of kids and high traffic.

To make your tent last longer: never wear your shoes inside the tent, always be gentle with the zippers, always let it completely dry before packing it up (or unpack it as soon as you get home and let it dry out, otherwise you'll get mold), store your tent in a cool, dry place, never walk on the tent when taking down or setting it upl, and, as picky as it sounds, try not to touch the rainfly very much...the oils on your fingers can affect the water-proofing on the rainfly.
It pays to do a little research and reading of reviews before you buy. There are many different options out there for many different kinds of camping and uses. Good luck.

I'm a big fan of Sierra Designs. They've got some really great light-weight tents that are put together really well and do a bomber job of keeping out the elements.
