My 6 year old son only uses the girls toilets at school. What should I do?

I have sat down and asked him why and he says it's because he doesn't like the urinals.

So he'll either use the girls or else hold on until he gets home.

The teachers tell him off and students make fun of him.

Is this normal?

Ask the teachers are the urinals smelly are they clean does he have a male role model who could talk to him.Do not let him hold on Our Daughter was like that and would hold on to she came home and at age 10 had to have her tubes to her kidneys shifted to a stronger more muscled place on her bladder.
If it was not done she would be needing a new kidney now so dont muck around find some way of helping your son

That is totally normal. I was the same way and I still don't like urinals and I won't use them. Try talking to him and tell him that there are toilets in the boy's room too that he can use. Also you can tell him that it is not good to hold it until he gets home. ( Which is true it isn't good because it can damage his kidneys and stuff.) Tell him that there are other little boys like him that feel the same way and that they just use the tolilets in the boys room in the stalls. Then after you get that settled then talk to the teachers. It isn't right for the teachers to tell him off and that shouldn't be done. And the kids shouldn't be making fun of him. There are probably kids that are making fun of him that are the same way as he is but doesn't show it. If the kid doesn't like the urinals then he shouldn't be forced to use them or hold it until he gets home. Good luck and I am sorry to hear what happened to your son.

i would personally see it as normal have you been inside a boys toilet latley??? they smell really bad!
maybe you could get a male friend or his dad(if available) someone he knows to take him in and explain the whole thing too him what the urinal does.. where the water comes from... tell him it is ok not too use the urinals and just use a normal toilet like the ones in the girls toilet.
I would have a word with these teachers too i think they need to be a little more sensitive and all three parties should try and work together to work it out

If I understand your question correctly it might just be that the boy bathroom's are gross so he goes to the girls. Also I think alot of the time when your kids are little mom takes the bathroom duty when your in public. (mom's normally potty more then dad's) So they get used to going to that bathroom. I would just sit down with him and explain why he needs to use the boy's bathroom at school. And just let him know that he doesn't have to use the urinals if he doesn't want to. You also need to talk to his teacher because there is something wrong with a teacher that would embarrass a little kid in front of all the other kids it's just wrong.

And just so you know there is nothing wrong with him being more comfortable sitting to go pee. Everyone's different. Good Luck

Sounds like he's ahead of his time. So many clubs in Dallas have the uni-sex bathrooms. Not by design, but by usage. The bathrooms are clean for either gender, so they become a quiet place to hang out and talk. Outside, the band is blaring, can't talk easily. The Ridglea has the old fashioned theatre style bathrooms, the kind with the large lounge. The lounge in the ladies room is a comfy hangout for both sexes.

There are regular toilets in the boys bathrooms for when they have a BM, so why doesn't he use those? You make it sound as though he goes in the girls bathroom to go potty. I don't see any reason why the kids should make fun of him for using the toilet, and you definitly need to stick up for him and talk to the teacher about this, he/she should not ridicule your child. If he is comfortable with sitting down to pee let him do so. He'll grow out of it eventually on his own time.

He is probably use to the toilets that you usually find at home, not unirals , so he may just feel beter with it. If he likes to use it , it's because he is familiar with it. I dont know if my brothers school has urinals cause I am a girl, I only know what they are I dont know how to use them or anything like that. My brothers use a regular 'at home' toilet when we are at home or out in places and they go in the womans bathroom (my mom makes them go with me because she says there couldd be any old crazy in the bathroom) even though 20% of the time they go in the mans room anyway but thats besides the point.


I said all this to say it may bed cause of familarity.

I did the same thing in kindergarten, I was 5!!! I used the boys bathroom. I don't know why but I stopped in the 1st grade.

They should have regular toilets plus urinals in the boys bathroom. See if you can convince him to go into the stalls and use the regular toilets in the boys bathroom.
