Its a sign of stress and boredom....border collies are working dogs... they need a job to do. You need to find a activity for your dog because he will only get worse if you do not. This activity will have to be done everyday. Having a active dog like that requires lots of walking or running...maybe have him carry a small back pack with weight in it and run or walk beside you for a hour or two a day. Or you could try and find a dog walker. Maybe even a obstacle course. Just going around the block or being in the backyard is not good enough for a dog like that. Good luck.

First things first, have you taken him to the vet? Make sure there is not a medical reason for it. If you know he is going, then you should take him out more. Another suggestion is to keep him in one certian room (is possible, mine are only allowed in 2 rooms of my house and know it and know they can not cross through the hallway/big opening between kitchen and living room and its just an open space), but make it his. If he has his space and feels comfortable in it, and knows its his, he wont go. It is his space, dogs wont go in their space. If he does go, give him a slightly smaller area. Its for the same reason you dont give a dog a crate thats to big, if he feels he has enough room to go to the bathroom away from his bed, he will. You may even have to shrink all the way down to an xpen and work your way back up. Also, does he see you clean it up? If so and he is bored, he could be making it a game (sounds exteremly weird but it is true). Agility dogs do it, they knock a bar and see you go pick it up, some will start knocking them on purpose, they learn it gets a reaction. Does he get attention for it (good or bad?) I say dont give him any attention at all, no bad dog, no looks, no nothing, just put him in another room, clean it up, spray it so smell and everything is gone and continue on. Some dogs also will do absolutely anything for attention-whether it is good or bad. If he learns that this gets him attention, he will do it. I suggest check out medical reasons first though, then move on to the other things I said...

If you do not have any other dogs, that can be the problem ... all animals need socialization and pooping in the house may be a way of your dog saying that they're stressed. If you do have other dogs, as well that may be a part of the problem, however not likely after so many months.

Animals have strange ways of dealing with things. Has your schedule changed. Has something in the house changed, new person, new pet, person or pet no there anymore???? My dog does this sometimes too. It's like a revenge thing w/ her sometimes. It could be something medically wrong too. Call your vet and ask.

Well he is still a puppy, and even tho you have been succesful house training him, you still have to reinforce it. Just keep doing whatever you did to housetrain him in the first place. Be diligent and it will stick! Greeat job housetraiing him in 2 weeks tho! Thats amazing!

Where do you live? Maybe it is because it is so cold and rainy or snowy there. My dogs have been having more accidents since the temps dropped.

it might be because of a change of atmosphere or something big in the house. new housemate? new job you have? different hours?? if anything, you have to retrain him.

have you been letting him out frequently enough? all you can do is when you start seeing him sniffing around to take him outside and start training him again.

Is he fixed? If so, maybe you should consider getting a kennel to keep him in while you are gone, or when he is BAD!
