You placed your question in the wrong category. Try; Biology,Alternative Science or Society and culture.
To answer your question; The cause is not necessairly the number of people on a given land area. Number of people is not the only factor. How efficiently the population uses the resources is more important. The effects; The Meditteranean and parts of Norht Africa are now desert like. These areas had forests. The populations in these areas are now bigger. But,they don't use wood for fuel or for building materials exclusivly anymore. So, when these populations were expanding. Deforestation was the effect of overpopulation. Mineral soil errosion was the second effect. This lead to famines as it does now in Africa. Famines decrease the population again. The cause of overpopulation is multifactorial. When crops and nutrition are good. People mature a little quicker. It can only be a year or so sooner. But, a year in populations as large as there are today is a lot. I've heard that girls are maturing faster physically. Over 100 years ago supposedly the average age of mestruation was 16-18. Now it's like 12+. Probably due to extra calories and fat in modern diets. So,teenage pregnancy increases the number of people in a population unexpectedly. Also, there are some women who are naturally more fertile throughout their life span and can have healthy kids even when they're supposed to be grandmothers, not mothers. The other factor is immunization. A lot of us should have been dead by now or even by our 12th birthday. If it wasn't for vaccines. Most of us will add more people into the population eventually. So, a decreased child mortality rate is a huge factor in most post industrialized nations. As for third world nations, They have many offspring because they don't have cheap contraceptives.

Learned this in Geography.
There are many different causes of population.
If you're thinking about poor places like India, then....
(1) People usually like males better then females, because they are the one that usually stays with their parents when they're grown up. And so if they keep having girls, then they keep giving birth until they have a boy.
(2) They are worried that the baby might die, so because of that they need to keep having more babies.
(3) Some of the women (or even teenage girls) aren't educated so they don't know about birth controls.
