They're on a promise.

As in if a workmate "Sorry guys, would love to go out for a drink after work, but I'm on a promise".

I haven't heard this before.

It means they have promised their partner they'd have sex after work.

The same thing happened to me when I asked one of my mates at work to stay back for a drink. Being the bold person that I am, I asked her there and then what it meant. She had a hard time keeping a straight face while she explained it.

It could mean anything. Could mean he/she promised not to go out drinking to someone. Could mean he/she promised to go home and do something else. I've heard it before, it means whatever it means to the person who said it. lol, if you're so curious, ask em what they meant by it.

I haven't heard it before, but it reminds me of the temperance pledges back in the days of prohibition. Maybe they promised not to drink either for a period of time, or forever. I think the temperance pledges were forever.

It means that they have already promised to be somewhere else and is used when someone has a social engagement.

Neither have I but I gather that they promised someone else to meet at the time?

It means they have already predesignated that time to someone or something else, so they promised it over to that thing...just another way of saying, I have other plans..so sorry

maybe he promised...
to be back home soon?
his/her husband/wife made him swear not to drink for the next week?
he's looking for an excuse because for some reason he doesn't want to go?

He/she is probably committed to either a religious promise (i.e. become a Christian) or he/she is trying to stop abusing alcohol. Invite your friend but make it clear that you wont give him/her a hard time if he/she wants to drink lemonade!

I believe it means that they promised someone that they will not drink alcohol.
