There are a lot of different symptoms. The ones that I notice are being tired alot, isolating from others, not doing dishes or housecleaning, headaches sometimes, constant worry or degrading yourself, loss of interest in the things you normally do or like, trouble concentrating, feeling worthless, thoughts of suicide, irritability, or thoughts of guilt.

One of the most recognized symptoms of depression is a profound feeling of sadness, hopelessness, or emptiness. You may be surprised to learn that people with depression often experience physical symptoms too. Physical symptoms such as being sick a lot. The reason this happens is that unchecked depression or any mental illness can affect so much that it actually lowers your body's immune system which leaves open to getting sick.

So if you are feeling any of these or they are getting in the way of you being happy you need to call your doctor or look in the phone book for a doctor. A family doctor can help but a psychiatrist is what you really want because their job is to diagnose people with depression. They would ask you a battery of questions and get some history. I was diagnosed in 1991 and I got on meds, got better, went to college, and now have worked in the mental health field for over ten years. So there is hope.
