My 8 year old son has problems focusing at school, it is getting worse. His teacher says he is a great kid there are no behavior problems, but he just can not focus and get his work done. When the other kids are done with their paper he is still on the first problem. He understands the work he just can't get going. Any ideas?? Could this be ADD or something else?

I have tried homeschooling him when he was in Kindergarten. I put him in school with the hope of peer pressure would push him to do his work. He has this focusing problem in all areas except for Tae Kwan Do and Dirt Bike Riding.

If this has been going on for more than a few months and has been a problem since the age of five- it may be Attention Deficient Disorder (not all ADD has to have (H)- Hyperactvitiy)
My advice would be to take him to his pediatrician and have you and his teach fill out questionairres such as Conner's or Vandebuilt to get him tested for ADD/ADHD. Goodluck.

If you feel that he has a serious problem such as ADD you should take him to see a doctor. But since you said he's a good kid and he seems to be intelligent, maybe he's simply bored. I remember being in grade school I was always bored because I thought the work was too easy for me. Eventually once I finally went to middle school I had a choice on classes and got to go into some that were more advanced. You should try asking him why he can't seem to concentrate and if maybe the work is too easy for him he can be moved to a gifted class. Or maybe just a new teacher!

It could be he does not like school. He likes tie and biking so of course he is going to focus well on them.

Is there a school around you that has smaller classes.? A private or charter school..

Maybe he is too smart for his class and is bored with the work.?

Try the home schooling if you can. Get him a tutor that can work on things he may not know.

Keep trying and dont give up.

Good Luck.

In our family we had a child just like that. He was tested and was found to be very smart. He is now 15 and in college. Have him tested, thats the first thing you have to have done. When you know his i.q. then you can see if he needs special schooling or maybe tutouring.
Nowadays they like saying kids have problems but mostly its society that has a problem. They want all children to work the same but they are not.
Whatever you do, dont let them tell you your kid needs medication, they like prescribing drugs rather then finding out what the problem is.
Good Luck

i personally as well as my brother have the same problem in schooling... all the teachers say that i know all of the answers i just can't focus... my brother they say knows the information one day, but has no clue the next....

it isn't necessarily ADD, it may just be the child is having difficulties in that particular enviorment. Try a couple new or different work exercises at home and see if any work in particular... if so tell the teacher. maybe the teacher just isn't using his.

Try relating the problems to his life. instead of "if ann does this" try using "mom" it may just work

It's possible that your son has ADD. I'm 17 and was diagnosed at a very young age. My 12 year old brother and I both have diagnosed ADD and had similar indicators when we were young, including the inability to focus, severe mood swings, and sometimes the inability to make friends in new situations. However you would probably want to talk to his doctor, and ask their opinion on whether he should get tested.

Sometimes there are issues that kids keep locked inside that we don't know about.... maybe he needs to be challenged.... sit down and talk to your son first and see what he has to say about it. Try talking to the teacher one more time after that. Then go see a psycologist or someone professional.

most definitly a possibility, take him to the doctor and ask, dont be afraid to try meds, and if he doesnt like them try somthin else, find what works for him and helps him, also, have a parent teacher conference and explain the situation as you see it and ask the teacher to pay attention and help him stay focused, not by yelling at him but by sitting there beside him talking about the current assignment, tell the teacher your working with him at home and with your family doctor to help correct the problem but it may take time.....most of all be as nice and respectful to the teacher as possible, alot of teachers nowadays arent as helpful and cooperative as they used to be but if you show genuine effort they may too

He sounds like me when I was in school.
I dropped out and realized school was just a bunch of useless BS. Other than knowing th e basics of course.
Take him out of school and homeschool him, he will focus better Im sure.
He probably feels stupid since everyone else is quicker than him, so he figures why bother.
Take him out, maybe put him in a private school or religious school. All I know is PUBLIC schools are crappy.
