Often times someone with a chronic back problem will find themselves sleeping on their stomach.. If this is the case, may want to learn to sleep with a pillow under your knees and spend more time on your back.. Perhaps there is need of something under your mattress to make sure it remains level when you are in the bed. Perhaps it is an early warning to get it taken care of before it becomes something much more serious. May want to visit a doctor of Chiropractic and have an evaluation to determine what is taking place in your spinal area.

Everyone has mentioned the obvious - - - consider getting a new mattress . . . . or one of those fabulous expensive sleep number beds. Do you sleep on your side? One thing that might help immediately is to sleep with a pillow between your knees. Do this every night and it will become a good habit because it DOES help lower back problems. If you sleep on your back then put the pillow under your knees - - - it may take two pillows for this. Also try taking Advil at night, sometime before bedtime.

Yes, the bed is likely to be the first culprit.
If you cant afford to change your mattress, try strong cardboard covered with a duvet underneath your sheet. Also change the position you sleep in by trying different amounts/softness of pillows; I find that having one, two or none makes a difference...

Since everyone said bed I wont. Number one physical condition that will be painful in the morning and get better as the day goes on is osteoarthritis of the facet joints in the lumbar spine.

Your mattress is too soft. get a harder one. It will feel very uncomfortable at first you'll soon get used to it. I suffered for years then i moved to china where the mattresses are all hard. It took a while but no more pain and a good nights sleep.

I had the same problem. I suspected my mattress - it was a bit lumpy though not all that old. I treated myself to a Myers mattress, one of those that conform to your body shape. It is SO comfortable you wouldn't believe, and my back is a lot better. Save up and go for the best you can afford!

(Don't get one with buttons and sticking-out bits, get a lovely smooth one!) Hope this helps!

My First thought would be Your bed!
Old or soft beds contribute to most back discomfort!
