Back in the beginning before structured law, was there a better way to keep people moral than by making up stories of heaven and hell?

No better way at all... and that's one of the chief things about religion that has to be recognized. We have a better system for keeping order today. Religions need to back off of the issues and ideas of the past - Heaven and Hell - they just aren't needed.

Religions have to evolve and adapt to the needs of today and learn to serve our modern population. You can't expect to steer your automobile with a set of leather reins and a buggy whip. Good Gosh.!

I say it's time to thank 'God' for all he's done and then pack him away in a crate...and move on to adapt a reality-based belief.

The God-idea was perfect for it's time... really great, in fact... but now it's time is passed. Get with it... We aren't able to believe the stuff in the old books anymore - we know better - so why try to sell it as if it's the living truth and applicable to the events of now? Let it go... just thank it nicely and let it go.

Oh, they're no stories my dear Justin. Before there was structured law, People weren't as doubtful and prone to sin because God was personally interactive with Him and people had a relationship with Him. More people brought upon more human nature which resulted in more sin. When the kids start misbehaving, it's then time to lay down the rules in stone. (yeah the ten commandments were laid out in stone and that's where they get the saying).

Heaven and Hell are not really part of ancient religion. Rather the Law was there so that man could live in unity.

Heaven and hell is not a story -
Apparently you think it was created to keep order?
Why would it have existed for 6,000 years with billions of people?

Guess not--- look what they used to tell their children to keep them in order-- all the children's fairytales are a form of mental child abuse-- the big bad wolf, the three little pigs, etc. Thoughts of horrifying demise was a mainstay in structuring discipline in the past-- nowadays parents just mentally and physically abuse their children, or kick them out of the house to fend for themselves. We've come a long way, haven't we?

AIDS and other STD's (sexually transmitted diseases) may have worked if they existed back then. But then again, they don't seem to be helping the morality today. I guess people just never learn, do they?

There was no beginning before God, so there was no beginning before right and wrong or heaven and hell.

there was stoning..and later shunning until they repented....
from the very beginning God told us the meaning of life...you must have been absent....to worship God with our whole mind, body, and strength and to love one another as ourselves.
