I have been trying to find a GOOD flat bed scanner. It must also do larger negatives. I looked at the HP 4890 and did not like reading the bad reviews. I have a major pile of negatives in the old sizes. I can't afford to have them printed conventionally.

I use an Epson 4870 flat bed, it will scan 4800 dpi optical, it has digital ice, and it has plastic trays to hold negs or trans from 35mm to 8x10. this model is of course out dated but you could probably find one on e-bay. I payed about 300.00 usd. about two years ago. very nice unit. good luck

The Canon CanoScan does a fair job of scanning negs, but in reality no flatbeds do as good a job as a dedicated film scanner. It very much depends on your needs. If you're interested in just scanning for storage and doing standard sized (4 x 5) prints, then it should be okay. If you want to blow them up to 8 x 10s, you'll probably want a decent resolution film scanner.

Given that a decent consumer flatbed can be found for around $100, you may be able to find a good used 35mm neg scanner (assuming you have 35mm negatives) for around the same amount. I have used Nikon and Minolta models for print publications and have been happy with them.
