I look left then right. I also look right then left. Instinct tells us to look left first then right, because you are sitting on the left side (USA, left hand drive, right side of the road).

Left because the cars on your left are nearest to you.
If you stepped off the curb without looking to the left first, you wouldn't have time to jump ouy of the way but you would with the cars in the far lane, comming from the right.

Yup. I always look to my left first.

you look left first because that is the direction that traffic would be coming from (generally) you look right to check the opposite lane, then you look left again to see if there is a vehicle that has entered the lane since you last looked.

left then right. theres no point in looking right first, mostly because the left is oncoming traffic that you have to cross first.
