My 10 year old Golden Retreiver has had an ear infection for weeks now. The drops that the vet gave me seem to do nothing, the vet also said to try rubbing alcohol, but the condition is worsening. She constantly shakes her head and whines when I touch her ears or head. I have to clean thick smelly blackish goo out of both ears every day. What is this in her ear and how do I get rid of it?

Common problem.Tell the vet that the drops didnt work. You must follow directions. When there is dark wax with foul odor,,you need the med drops & the ear cleaning solution.Clean first,,then drops. This is usually caused by the dog having a narrow ear canal that doesnt get enough air in it~usually floppy eared dogs.Ask your vet the proper way to clean the ear by lifting up on the ear as to swab without puncturing the ear drum. Get your dog outside more often,,which help the ears to air out.Must use drops until it works & always clean ears & dry.

Sounds like a yeast infection. My dog suffered from chronic ear infections for over a year. We tried vet prescribed medication and all kinds of cleansers and nothing helped. After a lot of researching to find him some relief, I finally found a solution called Zymox. It's all natural and won't sting or burn. It was a miracle worker for me and my pup. We applied the solution twice and he's never had a problem with his ears since, and this was about 3 months ago. You can buy it at amazon.com. Look it up and read the reviews. Good luck!

You need to take her back to the vet. It sounds like possibly ear mites. If you had taken her to the vet before he should have swabbed the ear and looked under the microscope for mites. If you are treating your dog with an over the counter medication you could be doing more harm then good. As for finding the tick in her bed and eggs on her back you need to get her to a vet immediately.

First, go buy some regular dog ear cleaner instead of using rubbing alcohol. Pour the cleaner into the ears, use a lot of it, and massage the base of the ear for a minute or two. Then let the dog shake her head, and wipe everything out with dry cotton balls. Next, put the medication in, try to get it as deep into the ear canal as you can. If they didn't give you Otomax, go back and ask for it, that works the best. Clean and medicate the ears 2-3 times per day until it clears up.

Don't let your dog swim or bathe her until the infection is gone; water in the ears can make it ten times worse.

In the future, make sure after she swims you flush her ears out with cleaner, let them dry out for a minute, and follow up with some ear powder (cleaner and powder are available at any petstore). Also, be careful not to get water in her ears when you bathe her, and flush her ears after baths and powder them too. If she goes to a groomer, ask them to put cotton in her ears or not wash her head at all.

You should keep flushing her ears out 1-2 times per week even when the infection is gone. Goldens are very prone to these infections and it's not uncommon for them to be hard to cure.

what i did , take WARM olive oil and drip a teaspoonful into each ear. rub.this does 3 things, soothes inflamation, stops itching , kills mites.also at the same time you must heal the ear from the inside out. do this with pro-biotics and nzymes . there is a overgrowth of yeast that will make paws itch , ears infect and itch, and skin red swollen and droping hair like crazy... clean out the dogs immune funtion with pro-biotics and nzymes.this will get the yeast under control.(works for people too !)

My dogs ears do that. She has a yeast infection in them. We have to treat her daily for the rest of her life. Have your vet check for yeast. If he/she still does not help your dog. Find a new vet.

She needs antibiotics...and get her back to the vet immediately.
Have the vet clean her ears and then you keep them clean..she needs medical attention, this could affect her hearing.

you have to clean out with cotton on long sticks to get deep down into here ears...dont worry..you wont damage her ear drums..as dogs have like an l-shape..you can go right down to the bottom of her ear...wrap the cotton wool around the stick..a bit like a q-tip..exept longer..get some ears cleaning liquid first...sqirt quite alot into her ear..and rub it in..wait for about 30 seconds..then start cleaning..i know its not a pleasant job...but its the only way to clean them properly..she has probably got ear mites..did the vet check for those??and did he give her antibiotics??i was a vets assistant..thats how i can tell you this info..best of luck..by the way..the vets should have given her ears a complete clean out..and pulled the hairs from the inside of her ears out...or even shaved them..by the way...wear gloves..as ear mites can live in human ears too...and make sure to clean your hands after.

Go to a vet or find a new vet that will help you. Don't let your dog suffer if you can help it.
