The sign said in Latin "Iesus Nazarenus Rexus Iudaerum" Jesus of Nazareth King of Jews, for the pharisees this was a blasphemy, because for them Jesus was a lire and they couldn't stand the idea that Jesus was the son of God. For them, that still living waiting the Messiah, the Torah was the law and they didn't have any king and they didn't accept that Jesus could be their king, that's the reason that when they'd read the sign they said to Pilatus, don't write "The king of Jews" write "He said he was the King of Jews" and Pilatus said "I've wrote what I've wrote."

The Romans thought the Jews were the dogs of the earth. This was one more way to drill it into them that they were nothing. They also killed slowly, painfully, and completely embarrassed you before you died so that you would know who had really beaten you. By calling Jesus the King of the Jesus from a place as lowly as Nazareth was the ultimate insult to a bunch of self righteous lawyers.

The same reason people today get upset at the words "Merry Christmas" or the Ten Commandments on display in public. They say it offends them, but in truth, they are seeking to act and look offended for no real reason. They pretend to take things personally that they can just turn their back on, or shut their eyes against. They prefer to stir up hatred and prejudice and discord - and that is what the Pharisees were doing when they saw a sign meant to mock Christ, and pretended to take it seriously.

Because the sign said "King Of The Jews" when the Pharisees wanted to sign to say "He said He was King Of The Jews". They didn't want the world to think that Jesus was their king.
The Roman soldier said "I have written what I have written".

not just because the sign said THE KING OF THE JEWS but because Jesus said He was the Son of God and they were so legalistic that Jesus was God incarnate and they saw God face to face and they could not stand it.Jesus did not have to say one word but when they looked at Him they saw their own sins and it drove them crazy
