Usually photo quality is considered 150 dpi or better.
20" x 20" is 3000 dots x 3000 dots
that's 9 Million dots or 9 megapixels.

Poster quality, usually not viewed too close, is 72 dpi or better
20" x 20" is 1440 dots x 1440 dots
that's about 2 Megapixels.

Depending on what you want 2 to 9 megapixels. Higher if you want to go bigger, but you should now be able to do the math.

My 5Megapixel digital camera can do the job. If you can change the "quality" setting on your camera to its highest resolution, you should be ok. What matters is your photo editing software and choice of printer.

My photo editor displays the size of the image at the bottom (I've seen some of my high resolution images be 35x36 inches.

Sounds like you need a large-format plotter/printer. HP makes these for banners, posters, etc, that require a large format. These are WAY too expensive for the regular consumer (around $5,000-$20,000.

Here's some info:

and NO I don't work for HP, nor am I a spammer.

HP makes some really good large format printers.
