Any large amount of food in the stomach has that effect on me--it makes my sleep lighter. So does sleeping during a time I don't usually sleep, or sleeping in.

The "strange and active dreams", if they're the same ones I'm thinking of, are generally pretty vivid; and you're thinking unusually clearly in them, or may even know you're dreaming. (If you figure out you're dreaming, you can do just about whatever you want, if you're thinking clearly enough to do it. I like flying--try it yourself. Fun stuff.)

Sometimes, though, when I'm just about to wake up, I feel "tired" in my dreams, rather than active--I imagine that's the sensations from my body, which is of course lying in bed, trickling through to my brain again.

Sleep really is fascinating... it's so much more than just lying still and snoring.

If one gets low blood sugar episodes during the night then strange and active dreams can result. Milk, although protein, can act on the body like a carbohydrate. If insulin kicks in to handle the milk, and does too good a job, low blood sugar can result.

Suggestion, switch to a more slowly digesting protein, such as turkey. It has triptophane which is said to assist in sleep, but also will help keep blood sugar more level during the night.
