His abrasive personality and tendency to speak his mind, often in erudite terms unusual for a sportscaster, made him, according to one poll, both the most-liked and most-hated television reporter in the country.

a lot of people thnk howard cosell is dead, but thats just a ruse. In 95 he became the new president of the hair club for men..

He passed away in 1995.
He was fired from Monday Night Football a few years before that for calling a black player a "little monkey". In his defense, he used that term to describe small, fast players of any color, but the damage was done to his reputation. He, as Mike Tyson so eloquently stated, "faded into Bolivian" after that, and his legacy was really not restored until the Ali movie portrayed him so positively.
