Trying out a bug for purchase. The sound comes from the center of the car. It does not happen when I slowly release the gas but happens in second gear. When the owner drove it that never happened. Do new clutches or something do this new?

The rubber on the front mount on the VW transaxle are known to seperate, and if replaced may have been damaged or loose, and it would thump the body if this is the case.
And the guy above has a good point, the shifting rod linkage runs back through the tunnel between the seats, (and honestly, the older bugs were built better even though not as powerful, so I'd stick to the '60s Bugs if you have a choice).

You know there are alot of reasons one could summize by just sitting here and running through the gears of your car. By knowing exactly what is taking place when you step on the clutch pedal, and shift to a gear. Then picturing the gas pedal and cable moving thru the tubes and tunnels of the car.
Since you have a brand new/ used/rebuilt,I would question if the through-out bearing was replaced as well,or the cross shaft supporting the bearing was replaced. Both are good sources of annoying happenings with VW. But what you describe in brief detail is enough to make me feel there is not enough info to Identify such a sound to a direct known problem. If the trans was completly overhauled, there could be strange noices, since it is new. And if that is the case and you are in touch with the person who rebuilt it, let them know you are monitoring a strange sound and keep them aware of its progress or demise. I would give it a good break-in time to smooth out any creaks and bumps too. I hope that helps.

Yes, they need a better excuse. I am really getting sick of the tactics which people use to avoid talking about or explaining an issue. One of the tactics used is to say, "You are taking that out of context," and another is to say that someone is a racist. These two things are used repeatedly to kill discussion. Sharpton and Jackson are both good for this. It's irritating and I wish that just once they would give a straight answer when defending these racist comments which were made by Wright.

There is no adjustment on the tranny the only adjustable thing would be at the rod coupler to the trans. Its under the rear seat, take the panel cover off the pan and you will see what I'm talking about. If that wont work the trans is bad.

i have heard of something weird , the clutch cable tube will sometimes break its support in the middle of the tunnel , this may be the case with yours , it's a comparatively easy fix , with a MiG welder , this could be a good bargaining tool in negotiating the price , good luck
