The miles will vary from summer to winter. As has already been pointed out this is changing rapidly due to global warming. It is also larger at the south pole than the north due to the tempering effect of more ocean at the north pole.

I don't think you can get an actual number for that sentence, the figure is changing daily. Ice is melting from the poles at a very rapid rate these days.
