I lightly thump her on the nose and say a stern NO when she licks me but she still does it and she lies down and crawls up to my feet and trys to lick my feet and hands. It drives me CRAZY! WHY doesn't she learn that she will get a thump, is she stubborn or is it something else? Suggestions?

Okay, I am not a mean person or Gogparent but I just don't like it when she licks my hand. My other pup, a lab, doesn't lick. I never HIT my dogs, they are the world to me and I love them. I just don't know why Sienna doesn't listen when I say NO.

OMIGOD! My heeler mix is a incessant licker too! I suspect it is a security issue. In my case, I adopted her from a shelter and it appears she was a stray that had been lost for some time. Unknown to me and my husband until we took her home, she also had intense separation anxiety. Having grown up with dogs and been around dogs my entire life, including having an older female dog, I honestly have never been around a dog who likes to lick people as much as my heeler mix. We've never found a way to permanently 'cure" it, but have a few suggestions that may work to some extent. There are products out there that are supposed to make licking stop, such as Bitter Apple Spray and others. You would have to apply them to your hands and feet though. Once the dog gets a taste, it may learn to stop. I'll admit we never tried this. Instead, we just continued to show affection and develop her confidence. As I'm her primary caregiver, my dog also knows that what i say goes. I am the only person she will stop licking if I tell her "no." I do it gently though and I've never slapped or hit her when she licks. If you do so, you're only teaching your dog to fear you or to associate you with unpleasantness. In our case, we have an alternative behavior we encourage - she is allowed to place her paw or paws on our knees (not allowed to jump up - there's a difference!). This way she gets to touch and be near, but NOT lick! Hope this helps. Keep in mind in dog world, licking is a nice thing generally - shows love, respect and desire to please.

Oh, and if you're not familiar with heelers - they're super intelligent, but can be very stubborn.

She is sharing affection with you or trying to. It is her way of telling you she cares for and appreciates you. It is normal behaviour. Some dogs show affection more than others, just like people. this is not a bad behaviour. Do you sit and love on her and interact with her in a good way?

No, she doesn't realize why you think she is being bad. Perhaps a stuffed animal would have been a better choice for you.

You are confusing the poor dog. She is trying to show you affection by licking you and you are punishing her. Maybe you got you lab to stop showing affection but why would you want to break this dogs spirit? All she wants to do is love you.

Licking is a way that a dog shows affection. Why would you punish her for showing affection?
