First off, to the person complaining about how often this subject is brought up....This is a question and answer site. There are new people on it all the time, they do not know what questions have been asked. Besides, if you want something that will be different and more intertaining, it won't be on a question and answer site.
I like Pit Bulls and I also like all breeds of dogs. Just like anything else, you can have good ones and bad ones. They will always have the fighting instinct, so it is important for the right kind of person to own them to know how to handle certian situations. I do not think they should be banned. I think they should have tougher laws on breeding them, against fighting them, against abusing them, and a law that tests people who adopt them to make sure that they completely understand the breed and will raise it properly. People also need to look into all kinds of breeds so they know what it takes before they get one. I'm a trainer and that's my bigest pet peeve. The Pits are suffering because of it because everyone thinks they are the "Dogs from Hell". The Labs are suffering for it because all you hear about them is that they are "great dogs". When people get them and don't have the patience with them being hyper for a few years and just wait it out, they end up going to the pound and get put down. People get Huskies and get really mad at them because they "Pull so hard". Hello, they are sled dogs. I'm sorry, I'm venting a bit too much. Anyways, I really feel sorry for the Pits because the people are so scared of them. It's sad because it's people that make them get the bad rap. (Also, in their defense, since I've been training, I've only heard of one dog attack with a Pit and many with Labs. Any dog can be mean and any dog can be a great dog)

There have been SOOOOOO many flippin questions about this. If you would go back and read, you would see what people think.

Pit bulls, by nature, are typically dog aggressive dogs. That does not mean they will ever eat a baby or growl at a human, unless they are abused or trained to do that. Any human aggression in a pit bull should NOT be tolerated and the dog should either see a behaviorist or put to sleep. It is the people who do not understand that there is no correllation between DA (dog vs dog) and HA (dog vs human) that create problems.

The biggest problems the pit bulls face are #1 (and no other #1): BAD OWNERS. The people that do not research what kind of dog they have and the kind of attention this dog requires and deserves. These people get the dog because they want a dog that they think will make them look tough. They think that the dog will kill an intruder. The pit bull IS NOT a guard dog. Most dogs would alert to an intruder, but would not attack it. After realizing it is a person, they would sashay up to them, wiggling butt and all and demad kisses.

Problem #2: Bad press (because of bad owners). The press often calls a dog bite story a "pit bull attack" because it draws attention and ratings. Sometimes the dog involved is not a pit at all, not even closely related.

I personally have a pit bull. He is one year old and is neutered and is properly trained (off leash and on) and i know how he reacts. The number one rule to pit bull ownership is: NEVER TRUST YOUR PIT BULL NOT TO FIGHT. The dog was bred for bull baiting--an aggressive sport. Then when that became illegal, it went underground and became dog fighting. They are not HA because their handler would need to go in and pull them away if necessary and could not do that if they had to worry about bring back a stub for a hand. The owners that do not understand that golden rule set their dog up for failure. Pure and Simple.

It's not the pit bull terrier they are afraid off it's the bad breeders and owners. The pit bull like all dogs has good breeders and then it has shady ones. The fear is simply this:

These dogs are still been used today as pit fighters and they are the second best fighting dog in the world after the Tosa Inu. These dogs can be very dog aggressive. Especially if been bred by a poor class breeder. I know these dogs are loyal and loving to humans. Infact some people say they do not make good guard dogs because of here love for humans. But when I walk my dog and I see a pit bull I fear for my dog. The same pit bull has tried to attack my dog twice. Luckily both times it has been on the lead but second time the owner was drunk!

Any dog can be a mean dog! No matter what kind of dog....in fact most of the dogs that bite, are them darn little ones! But, you don't see a ban on them! The media and the bad owners are the ones that give these dogs a bad name. I had a pitbull years ago and he was the best dog....I just got a young pitbull cross a month ago too. My lab x is more growly than he'll ever be! I know about the breed and I will always watch him.....just in case. They were bred for bull baiting after all! So, we as owners have to be responsible for them with other dogs and people. I love the bullie breeds! And I agree that some of these young "tough" guys want a macho dog to make them look tough....sad! I had a mastiff x and he was the best dog ever, but he had pups with a boxer and a young guy got his pup to act all tough. Well, the dog ended up biting people and had to be put down....my dog never acted like that! It's all in the owners!

I don't possess a Pit, however I labored for a no-kill refuge for really awhile while developing up and did really a little of coaching. I actually consider the temperment of the Pit Bull is an instantaneous correlation to the educational and healing it gets from the landlord. Unfortunately, the Pit Bull is generally dealt with as a popularity image versus a puppy or puppy. Alot of persons that are meant to NOT be allowed inside 50 toes of a puppy selected to possess the Pit Bull due to the fact that they suppose it makes them appear rough to have one. Not due to the fact that they love the puppy or breed. The final result is an unruly, uncontrollable, and regularly instances abused and cruel animal that has no recognize for persons. The Pit Bull is an overly robust animal, and now not respecting persons as it is alpha surely ends up in concern. It is most important to do not forget that any puppy that's dealt with badly is a unsafe puppy. The jaw force of a Pit Bull is way better than alot of different puppies, making them infamous once they assault due to the fact that it does that a lot more harm. The media contributes to the plight of the Pit Bull, additionally. Golden Retrievers used to have essentially the most bites according to yr of any breed (now not certain if that's nonetheless present expertise or now not), however what number of Golden bites do you listen approximately within the information? Or some other breed, for that topic? You do not, until the assault used to be mainly extreme. But while a Pit Bull bites - although by means of bites this can be a very slight one - it is likely one of the best information tale that night time. My favourite puppies to paintings with once they got here in to the no-kill refuge have been our Pit Bulls and Pit mixes - as a complete, in my enjoy they're effortless to educate, attentive puppies. It is a disgrace they don't get the recognize or love they deserve. A little little bit of time and love in a Pit Bull ends up in a distinct puppy.

But also my dog was attacked by too 9 month old Pit Bull puppies! If this lady hadn't picked my dog up and held it up over her head the two dogs whould have ripped my dog inhalf! Finally the owners grabed their wto dogs away but they didn't even apologise! I couldn't hold him high enough i am too short :( I would never trust one without it's owner. But they make great dogs if people look after then properly!

I think they are awesome dogs. At our clinic, we don't see a whole lot of them, but the ones we do see are big sweeties. One of our dermatology patients (she has allergies) comes into the clinic every week for an allergy shot. She barks at everyone like she's the queen of the world but there isn't a mean bone in her body. She's just fooling everyone!
The only thing that I've seen is a few of them can be dog-aggressive, in other words they don't like other dogs. But any dog can be like that, just like any dog can be mean to people. All dogs can bite! In fact, the little dogs are the ones who usually get a muzzle--not the pit bulls! I'd get a pit bull in a heartbeat.
Give your bully a big hug for me!

I think most people should never get one. Rare people, able to bring out the best in any dog, are the only people who should be allowed to have pit bulls. Special rules should hold true for pitbulls, Their runs should be nowhere near where the public are allowed.

I think people have turned many Pit Bulls into mean animals. If anyone has ever played with a Pit Bull puppy, they would know what I mean. It's sad, really. Very sad.

They can be great dogs. The only problem is if you end up with a dog that is startled or defending itself, it has been bred to kill. So, with that locked jaw you will get more damage than another breed.
I've seen great pits and in no way am intimidated by them.
But, a lot of places (apartments, condos, rented homes) will not allow them on the premises.
