James, this is a perfect marketing ploy and it works on so many of us - it's happening to me even when I said I will not let the spirit of this season overwhelm me with "giving."
Have you noticed we all are quick to say how it is the season to be giving? What happened to the rest of the days of the year? Well, that's why the charity organizations come out. Because they know that the wallets will be shut and locked away until the next year, when we will have our heart strings tugged and feel obligated to do the right thing. Already, my Christmas list is multiplying because I feel guilty, that I should include this person or that person. It is mind boggling but it is what we have been in tuned all our lives to follow - give, give, give and we do it this time of year because it is so well received. We look for ways to help others, to volunteer, to donate this or that - we just can't give enough!
Of course, all of this changes the very day after Christmas, at which time the charitiy organizations' tunes will change and will remind us that we still have time to donate tax deductible items before the year ends! :)

Because, in the words of Charles Dickens, 'It is at this time of year that Want is most keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices'.
How many things do we have that we can easily do without? Perhaps some of that money could be channeled to where it's most needed.

Because giving is traditional at Christmas, and they know most people will be more willing to part with a little change.

They try to do extra marketing at Christmastime because people are in a giving spirit and more likely to contribute.
