A lake might start out with little or no organic material (oligotrophic) and very little productivity, then as organic material increases, it becomes mesotrophic, and eventually eutrophic -which has too much organic material.

As "Formerly_" noted a lake to begin with can be treated in relation to its trophic state (oligotrophic, meso..., and eutrophic.) But evolution necessarily involves sedimentation. As we all know any lake is a good silt trap.
1) As the flow velocity drops, the silt and clay material brought by the inflow streams gets deposited at the bottom of a lake.
2) Gradually the lake looses its capacity and the water spread area reduces, and the plant community increases.
3) The fish and organisms living in water reduce in population.
4) Slowly, the lake turns into a marsh land and
5) finally develops into a dry expanse.
